Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported a record $21 billion operating income for the third quarter of 2026, driven entirely by a $20.91 billion paper valuation gain on its corporate treasury. However, despite increasing its aggregate holdings by 26% year-to-date to 848,517 BTC, the company's central performance indicator—Bitcoin per share—dropped 3.7% over the same period.
Treasury Accounting and Capital Management
Under current U.S. accounting standards, corporations must report unrealized fair-value crypto changes in quarterly earnings. This rule shift pushed Strategy's Q3 net income to $19.53 billion, or $44.75 per share, recovering from an $8.22 billion net loss recorded in the second quarter when crypto valuations fell. The paper gains coincided with a period where Bitcoin traded near $90,600.
To manage liquidity and build financial buffers, Strategy raised $21.23 billion in 2026, primarily through equity offerings. The company also sold $431.8 million worth of Bitcoin to finance dividends and share buybacks. Specifically, Strategy directed $2.04 billion toward repurchasing its STRC preferred stock and established a $5.07 billion cash reserve designed to fund 3.4 years of preferred dividends and interest payments. Due to these capital allocation priorities, weekly Bitcoin acquisitions dropped 84% within a two-week span earlier in October.
Management Shift and Stock Impact
- Operating Result: Record $21 billion Q3 operating income fueled by $20.91 billion in unrealized gains.
- Treasury Reserve: Total holdings reached 848,517 BTC, though Bitcoin per share fell 3.7% YTD.
- Financial Buffers: Spent $2.04 billion on STRC buybacks and created a $5.07 billion dividend reserve.
- Executive Changes: CFO Andrew Kang leaves on November 5, with Chief Operations Officer Reza Virasteh succeeding him on January 1.
Ahead of the report, Strategy (MSTR) stock fell 2.4% to close at $141.62, with an additional 0.8% decline in after-hours trading. Chief Executive Officer Phong Le stated that the company "demonstrated its commitment to returning STRC to health" as Strategy prepares to issue daily dividend payments on its preferred stock starting November 1.
Why It Matters
Strategy's divergence between total holdings and per-share asset backing highlights the risk of equity-funded crypto accumulation. Issuing new shares when equity valuation drops below the net asset value of the underlying assets dilutes existing stock, resulting in less underlying crypto per share. As Strategy works to launch a market for daily digital credit products, its ongoing reliance on debt and equity management will determine whether its treasury model can deliver sustained value without further diluting per-share holdings.
