Asset manager Bitwise has increased its 10-year Bitcoin (BTC) price forecast from $1.3 million to $1.6 million by 2036, representing a 19-fold rise from its $83,557 baseline price. Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan announced the updated target on October 28, 2026, stating that Bitcoin is "better positioned today than at any point in its past."
The $27.5 Trillion Store-of-Value Assumption
Bitwise relies on a total addressable market (TAM) model that divides projected sector allocations across Bitcoin's full supply of 21 million coins. The model projects that the combined Bitcoin and gold market will expand from $31.1 trillion to $109.8 trillion by 2036. Under the firm's base-case scenario, Bitcoin absorbs 25% of that combined pool, generating $27.5 trillion—or roughly 82%—of Bitcoin's total projected $33.6 trillion valuation.
At the starting valuation of $83,557, Bitcoin's 20.1 million circulating coins total approximately $1.7 trillion, accounting for 5% of the existing $31.1 trillion gold and BTC market. Six additional market categories in the model—including national treasury reserves and institutional portfolios—contribute an aggregate $6 trillion.
To support this shift, Bitwise points to tightening integration between the two assets. Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold reached a record 0.58 on September 11, with the report noting, "We would expect this relationship to persist and deepen over time as awareness of bitcoin's store-of-value properties continues to grow." The model factors in a 10-year correlation of 0.21, up from the historical 10-year average of 0.11.
Key details from the projection include:
- Base-Case Annual Return: Implies a 34.3% compound annual growth rate, compared to JPMorgan's 2036 base-case projections of 10% per year.
- Bear-Case Price Target: A reduced 2.5% market share and zero traction elsewhere yields a 2036 price of $130,686 (4.6% annual return).
- Current Trading Price: BTC trades at $79,902, down 1.12% over the past day, as market volatility persists alongside wider market demand fluctuations.
Bear Case Scenarios and Market Risks
Despite the bullish base case, market commentators remain split on Bitcoin's ability to displace physical gold. Media personality Jim Cramer stated this month that he continues to favor gold over Bitcoin for portfolio hedging. Furthermore, Bitwise explicitly highlights quantum computing, AI-driven mathematical advances, and potential regulatory rollbacks as key risk factors that could invalidate its thesis—concerns that echo broader industry debates surrounding quantum threats to crypto assets.
Why It Matters
This valuation model highlights how deeply institutional Bitcoin price targets depend on capturing market share from physical gold rather than relying solely on transactional utility. If sovereign treasuries and traditional asset managers maintain their historical preference for precious metals, Bitcoin's long-term growth curve drops significantly from a 34.3% annualized pace down toward single-digit returns. Consequently, institutional adoption of BTC as a reserve asset over the next decade will serve as the single critical metric determining whether these seven-figure forecasts materialize.
