Strategy Posts Record $20.91 Billion Q3 Operating Income, but BTC Yield Drops 3.7%

Strategy (MSTR) posted a record operating income of $20.91 billion for the third quarter of 2026, driven primarily by paper gains on its corporate cryptocurrency treasury, even as its BTC per share yield fell 3.7% year-to-date.

Record Operating Income and Balance Sheet Expansion

Net income for the period reached $19.53 billion, or $44.75 per diluted share, up sharply from $2.79 billion in the prior-year period. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang, who announced his departure in the quarterly release, confirmed that the $21 billion result represents the largest quarterly operating income in company history.

Strategy marks its holdings to market each quarter. The company held 848,517 bitcoin valued at $68.9 billion as of October 23, when Bitcoin traded at $81,200. The entire stack carries an average purchase price of $75,446 per token. Kang noted that Strategy increased its total bitcoin holdings by 26% year-to-date despite volatile market conditions.

However, core software revenue fell 3% year-over-year to $125.4 million, missing consensus analyst estimates of $127.2 million. Gross profit reached $89.6 million, reflecting a 71% margin compared to 70% a year earlier. Strategy closed September with $2.50 billion in cash and equivalents alongside $3.40 billion in short-term investments, building on momentum detailed in Strategy's Q3 performance report.

BTC Yield Dilution and Preferred Stock Repurchases

Despite overall profit gains, Strategy's primary management metric—BTC yield—declined 3.7% year-to-date, meaning each share represents less underlying bitcoin than in January. In dollar terms, the bitcoin position reflects a $2.03 billion loss over the same period. To fund preferred dividend obligations and share buybacks, the firm sold approximately $431.8 million worth of bitcoin in 2026.

Strategy raised $21.23 billion in overall capital during 2026, including $5.41 billion in net proceeds from its at-the-market equity program in Q3. A significant portion of these proceeds funded preferred stock repurchases: Strategy bought back 20,980,508 shares of STRC for $2.04 billion at an average price of $97.39, below the $100 stated par value. Chief Executive Officer Phong Le highlighted management's commitment to restoring STRC health, with approximately $956.7 million remaining under the current repurchase authorization.

Total cash reserves now stand at $5.07 billion (comprising $4.83 billion in USD Reserve and $242.4 million in USD Cash), providing 3.4 years of coverage for interest and dividend obligations. The board maintained the STRC dividend rate at 12.00%, while shareholders approved daily dividend payouts on October 28. STRC transitions to daily distributions on November 1, followed by STRF, STRK, and STRD on January 1, 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Record Earnings: Q3 operating income reached $20.91 billion with net income at $19.53 billion ($44.75 per share).
  • Treasury Scale: Holdings total 848,517 BTC worth $68.9 billion at an average cost of $75,446 per token.
  • Yield Compression: BTC yield dropped 3.7% YTD following $431.8 million in bitcoin sales to support dividend and debt service.
  • Liquidity Buffer: Strategy holds $5.07 billion in reserve, funding 3.4 years of dividend and debt obligations while STRC trades near its $100 par value at $99.99.

Why It Matters

While Strategy's record quarterly profit underscores the immense balance sheet upside of its corporate Bitcoin standard during market rallies, the negative 3.7% BTC yield demonstrates clear friction between maintaining preferred equity pegs and preserving per-share Bitcoin accretion. Liquidating $431.8 million in Bitcoin reserves to support debt service and buy back discounted preferred stock proves that treasury management requires tangible trade-offs. As STRC approaches its $100 par value, returning to non-dilutive capital generation will be critical for Strategy to resume building per-share Bitcoin value.
