Canada Crypto Economy Expands 2.3% to $247.7B as US Market Shrinks

Canada’s crypto economy expanded by 2.3% to $247.7 billion in the year to June 2026, even as the United States market contracted by 2.2% and the global crypto economy shrank 1.6%, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis.

Canadian Traders Shift Toward USD Stablecoins

The report positioned Canada as the second-largest nation in Chainalysis's "big money index" and ranked it 10th among 117 countries in grassroots adoption. Furthermore, Canada maintained the strongest peer-to-peer (P2P) crypto market among Group of Seven (G7) nations.

Trading preferences in Canada underwent a notable shift over the 12-month period. Stablecoins accounted for 44% of Canadian order-book volume in June 2026, rising from 30% a year earlier, with USDC dominating the segment. In contrast, store-of-value cryptocurrencies represented 29% of tracked volume. Smart contract layer-1 assets comprised 17%, payment-focused cryptocurrencies captured 8%, and meme coins, layer-2 tokens, and other digital assets accounted for the remaining 2%.

Institutional Flows Drive US Net Bitcoin Imports

While retail transfers below $10,000 remained net outbound from the United States, large institutional transactions shifted in the opposite direction. For the first time since 2022, the US became a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026, driven by whale transactions exceeding $10 million that accounted for 53,200 BTC flowing into the country—mirroring broader trends in Bitcoin whale accumulation.

Chainalysis highlighted that 99.1% of global stablecoin order-book volume was tied to the US dollar, as non-US residents increasingly rely on dollar-pegged tokens for offshore liquidity. Simultaneously, tokenized real-world assets (RWA) surged 135% to $36.07 billion through the second quarter of 2026, with tokenized US Treasuries reaching $15.42 billion, coinciding with growing decentralized interest in RWA trading platforms.

Key Takeaways

  • Canada's market growth: Canada’s crypto volume rose 2.3% to $247.7 billion, ranking 10th out of 117 nations in grassroots adoption.
  • US contraction: The US crypto economy fell 2.2%, as the global market shrank 1.6%.
  • Stablecoin dominance: 44% of Canadian trading volume went to stablecoins (led by USDC), surpassing store-of-value assets at 29%.
  • Institutional BTC imports: US transactions over $10M brought in 53,200 BTC, making the US a net BTC importer for the first time since 2022.
  • RWA growth: Tokenized real-world assets expanded 135% to $36.07 billion, including $15.42 billion in US Treasuries.

Why It Matters

The divergence between US and Canadian crypto adoption underscores how regional market dynamics and utility demands shape global capital flows. While American market activity is heavily driven by large institutional block transfers and Treasury tokenization, international users outside the US leverage dollar-backed stablecoins for synthetic dollar access. The massive growth in tokenized real-world assets demonstrates that traditional financial instruments are expanding on-chain even during broader market contractions.
