Bitcoin Whales Accumulate 88,987 BTC in One Month as Price Dips Below $81,400

Bitcoin dropped below $81,400 on Tuesday, yet the network's largest holders continued buying heavily through recent market volatility. Data from analytics platform Santiment reveals that wallet addresses holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC accumulated 88,987 BTC in just 30 days, starting from September 19.

Whales Push Balances to Six-Month Highs

The combined holdings of the 10 to 10,000 BTC cohort have now climbed past 13.69 million BTC, marking their highest total level in six months. Historically, the balance trajectory of these specific addresses has closely mirrored Bitcoin's broader market cycles. While persistent accumulation does not automatically guarantee an immediate rally, sustained buying from large-scale holders helps build structural support as Bitcoin tested key price support.

Key details from the latest market data include:

  • 88,987 BTC bought by whale addresses since September 19.
  • 13.69 million BTC total balance reached by this wallet tier, a six-month high.
  • $526.6 million single-day ETF inflow recorded on Monday.
  • $90.57 million in net outflows for spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded so far in October.

Corporate Treasuries and ETF Inflows Face Macro Pressures

Despite heavy whale buying, Bitcoin has struggled to push decisively higher due to shifting macroeconomic dynamics. HashKey Senior Researcher Tim Sun highlighted that elevated borrowing costs and shrinking valuation premiums have eroded the appetite of corporate treasuries to acquire Bitcoin via capital market financing.

Sun noted that key marginal buyers over the past two years came from corporate treasuries and spot ETFs. As central bank monetary policy faces renewed tightening pressure, the economic incentive for companies to expand crypto treasuries through debt or equity issuance has diminished, drawing comparisons to recent selloffs in AI tech equities.

Institutional ETF demand has also shown mixed momentum. Although US Bitcoin ETFs recorded $526.6 million in inflows on Monday—marking their largest single-day gain in nearly a month—the products remain down by $90.57 million in net redemptions for October.

Why It Matters

Bitcoin is undergoing a structural shift from speculative treasury expansion toward a mature asset-allocation model. In this environment, institutional demand is governed strictly by risk budgets, global liquidity, interest rates, and relative valuation against traditional financial assets.

While corporate buying power remains constrained by high capital costs, steady accumulation from high-net-worth individual whales acts as a critical absorption mechanism against broader macroeconomic shocks. Investors should watch whether daily ETF flows can maintain positive momentum to offset corporate financing headwinds.
