Bitcoin Reclaims $81,000 as $1 Billion Outflows Signal Supply Squeeze Ahead of FOMC

Bitcoin (BTC) rebounded 2% over the past 24 hours to briefly reclaim $81,000, supported by exchange outflows exceeding $1 billion and a technical recovery above its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA). However, conflicting market metrics and an impending Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) interest rate decision on October 28 leave analysts divided on whether the top cryptocurrency is primed for a rally or a pullback.

Bullish Indicators and Whales Bet Big

According to analysis shared by X user Sweep, BTC reclaiming its 50-day EMA backed by spot demand serves as "the first major sign of strength." Additionally, more than $1 billion in BTC moved off centralized exchanges into self-custody over a 24-hour period, signaling a potential impending supply shock.

Speculation is further fueled by high-conviction derivatives trading. Analyst Max Crypto disclosed that an unidentified whale opened a $72.1 million long position on BTC with 30x leverage ahead of the central bank announcement. The aggressive leverage comes as macro traders evaluate historical policy moves after the Fed held interest rates steady at its previous decision.

Bearish Signals and Key Technical Levels

Conversely, crypto analyst Ali Martinez cautioned that initial reactions to FOMC meetings are often muted, with sustained directional trends typically emerging over the following 24 hours to a week. Martinez outlined several bearish metrics urging trader caution:

  • Whale Profit-Taking: Large holders recently took approximately $156 million in profits, with total whale holdings declining by 8,162 BTC in 24 hours.
  • Coinbase Premium Collapse: The Coinbase Premium index dropped to around -0.17, marking one of its lowest levels since September and pointing to weaker buying demand from U.S. investors compared to Binance traders.
  • Critical Support at $81,000: Almost 1 million BTC previously traded around $81,000. Martinez warned that losing this support level could trigger a correction toward $67,000.
  • Resistance Targets: To confirm a bullish continuation, BTC must break above $84,500, where 620,000 BTC were acquired, opening upside paths to $92,000 and $104,000.

This friction between spot outflows and weakening demand reflects recent trends where spot demand drops have complicated recovery attempts.

Why It Matters

The stark divergence between massive exchange outflows and a deeply negative Coinbase Premium underscores a split market structure. While long-term holders appear to be accumulating and moving coins off exchanges, U.S. spot buyers remain hesitant heading into macro policy decisions. If $81,000 fails to hold following the FOMC update, high-leverage positions risk liquidation, potentially triggering a wider shakeout before a sustained trend can form.
