Bitcoin Dips Below $80K as Whales Accumulate $1.3B Amid Market Volatility

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 over the past 24 hours after surging to nearly $87,000 earlier this month, hit by hotter-than-expected US inflation data and broader macroeconomic friction. The downturn coincided with Bitcoin dropping after a hot CPI print and a sharp decline in Asian equities, where the South Korean KOSPI index fell over 7%.

Whale Accumulation and Historical Seasonality

Despite the price pull back, several underlying metrics indicate strong buyer interest beneath the surface:

  • Whale Buying Spree: Crypto analyst Ali Martinez revealed that large investors capitalized on the slump from $87,000 to $80,000 by acquiring 16,010 BTC, valued at nearly $1.3 billion.
  • Key Wallet Balances: Data from CryptoQuant showed that large wallets, excluding crypto exchanges and mining pools, expanded their holdings to 3.03 BTC, marking the highest combined balance since November of last year.
  • October Historical Trends: October has traditionally been a strong month for crypto, finishing in the red only 3 out of 13 times.
  • Post-CPI Patterns: X user Crypto Rover noted that following each of the last four US CPI announcements, initial market volatility was eventually replaced by strong bullish rallies.

Technical Targets and Market Projections

Market participants are watching several critical price levels to determine the next trend direction. According to market analyst account Wealthmanager, heavy bid zones exist between $75,000 and $80,000, which could provide a foundation for price stabilization.

Analyst Aman highlighted a developing head-and-shoulders chart pattern, pointing to $76,000 to $77,000 as the key downside zone to monitor if selling continues. On the upside, Ali Martinez pointed to $84,000—which aligns with the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA)—as the pivotal resistance level required to kickstart a broader recovery.

Why It Matters

Aggressive accumulation by large holders during macro-driven dips suggests that institutional and smart money investors view current price drops as buying opportunities rather than a structural trend reversal. While short-term macroeconomic pressures like inflation figures disrupt market momentum, liquidity absorption by whales narrows available exchange supply. If historical seasonal patterns repeat, the current price consolidation could position Bitcoin for a retest of major resistance levels before the end of the month.
