Bitcoin Drops to $80,979 After Hot US CPI Print Breaks ETF Cost Basis

Bitcoin (BTC) fell 3.3% over 24 hours to reach $80,979 following a hotter-than-expected inflation print, pushing market prices below the average cost basis for US spot Bitcoin ETFs.

  • US September CPI hit 3.7%, exceeding the 3.6% forecast and triggering widespread crypto market sell-offs.
  • US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $261.5 million in net outflows as the price slipped below their $81,500 average purchase price.
  • Non-exchange whale wallets expanded balances to 3.03 million BTC, marking their highest accumulation level since November 2025.
  • Leveraged traders suffered heavy losses, with long positions accounting for 91.6% of total liquidations.

ETF Outflows and Whale Accumulation Diverge

The macroeconomic sell-off occurred after annual US CPI rose to 3.7% in September against expectations of 3.6%, while core inflation registered at 2.6% compared to the 2.5% forecast. The sudden drop led to heavy leverage wipes, matching previous market shocks where US inflation pulled Bitcoin down to $82,731 and overall crypto liquidations reached $942M across exchanges.

Data from SoSoValue confirmed $261.5 million in net spot ETF outflows on the day of the release as Glassnode placed the average ETF cost basis near $81,500. However, CryptoQuant data revealed that whale entities were buying prior to the print. Non-exchange and non-mining pool whale balances grew to 3.03 million BTC, their highest level since November 2025. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju noted in an October 13 report: "The question is who is buying. Whales have switched from selling to accumulating… That is how early bull markets start, with retail still absent." Furthermore, analyst Darkfost estimated total 30-day spot and futures demand at +69,000 BTC.

Sentiment Split and Critical Support at $80,000

Social indicators tracked by Santiment showed retail trader sentiment turning negative on October 13, recording 0.82 bullish posts for every bearish comment across X, Reddit, and Telegram. Conversely, CryptoQuant's consensus index stood at +49.2 on October 14, with 84% of 164 analysts expressing a bullish outlook.

Market technicals highlight $80,000 as the primary battleground, where the largest spot bid block on Binance resides alongside CryptoQuant's 365-day moving average. Glassnode warned that a breakdown under $80,000 could trigger long liquidation clusters, exposing the True Market Mean cost basis at $78,000. On the upside, $88,000 represents the cost basis for 6-to-12-month holders and a major short liquidation pool.

Why It Matters

The growing divergence between institutional ETF outflows and aggressive whale accumulation highlights a classic transfer of supply from short-term traders to high-conviction entities. If Bitcoin holds the $80,000 order book support despite high inflation figures, the market will establish a solid floor for the next leg up. Conversely, losing $80,000 risks cascade liquidations toward $78,000, testing whether long-term whales retain their accumulated supply under extended pressure.
