Investors pulled $635.49 million from U.S. spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds on October 22, marking the largest single-day capital withdrawal since June 25, according to data from SoSoValue. The sudden outflow came just one day after the funds brought in $528.40 million and abruptly ended a three-day run of inflows that totaled $1.08 billion.
ETF Flows Flip as Bitcoin Rejects $85K Resistance
The sharp reversal on October 22 pushed net monthly flows for October into negative territory, standing at approximately $174.5 million in total withdrawals. The previous three-day streak started on October 19 with $526.6 million in entries, marking the largest single-day inflow since September 22.
However, price momentum stalled near resistance, echoing recent market pressure where Bitcoin fell to $81,652 after an $85K rejection. On October 22, BTC closed at $81,416.09 on Binance, down 3.18% for the day, while 24-hour trading data showed a 3.41% decline to $81,297. This sudden drop closely followed market turbulence where a flush wiped out $91M in longs on October 21.
DWF Labs Points to Critical 7% Drawdown Trigger
New research from crypto market maker DWF Labs analyzing ETF flow data since January 2024 shows that ETF holders typically absorb minor pullbacks but begin selling aggressively once Bitcoin drops 7% below its 20-day high.
- Flow Reversals: Average daily flows switch from $74 million in inflows to $72 million in outflows once the 7% threshold is crossed.
- Historical Pattern: Redemptions worsened in 19 of the 24 market drawdowns examined by DWF Labs.
- Key Level to Watch: Following the October 4 peak of $86,530, October 22's close placed BTC 5.9% below its high, putting the 7% sell threshold at $80,470.
- Upcoming Shift: If October 4 falls out of the 20-day window without a new high, the October 5 close of $85,766.87 becomes the reference point, lowering the trigger level to $79,760.
DWF Labs observed that ETF redemptions usually fade after reaching this point, with daily flows stabilizing near zero in the following week before recovering to net positive territory two weeks later.
Why It Matters
The findings illustrate how spot Bitcoin ETF flows function primarily as a trend-following mechanism that can magnify downside volatility during market pullbacks. As Bitcoin trades within 2% of the critical $80,470 threshold, a break lower could spark automated or risk-averse institutional liquidations. Market participants should monitor whether redemptions accelerate below $80,000 or follow DWF Labs' historical trend of exhausting within seven trading days.
