JPMorgan Models 10% Annualized Bitcoin Returns in Historic Capital Assumptions First

JPMorgan Asset Management has officially integrated Bitcoin into its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions (LTCMA) report for the first time in the publication's 30-year history, modeling a base-case annualized return of 10% over the next 10 to 15 years.

Bitcoin Outpaces Equities, Gold, and REITs in Base Case

In its long-term framework covering more than 200 asset classes, JPMorgan projects that Bitcoin will outperform headline traditional asset classes in expected long-term returns. While Bitcoin holds a 10% base-case expected return, US large-cap equities are projected at 7.5% annually, US REITs at 8.2%, and gold at 5.5%.

The report outlines a wide range of potential annual outcomes for the digital asset depending on macroeconomic conditions:

  • Bearish scenario: 9.7% annualized return.
  • Base case scenario: 10% annualized return.
  • Bullish scenario: 17% annualized return.

Despite these projections, the bank emphasized that the figures serve strictly as 10-to-15-year strategic portfolio modeling assumptions rather than price targets or allocation recommendations. This institutional modeling arrives alongside prior industry analyses, including previous JPMorgan long-term forecasts regarding asset adoption timelines.

Volatility and Correlation Obstacles Remain

While the modeled returns put Bitcoin ahead of conventional assets, the banking giant emphasized key risk factors that prevent the cryptocurrency from being treated as a standard portfolio component. JPMorgan estimated Bitcoin's volatility at approximately 55%, a level substantially higher than equities, bonds, or commodities like gold for portfolio insurance.

Due to Bitcoin's unstable correlation with broader public markets, JPMorgan did not incorporate the asset into its primary covariance matrices. Instead, the bank provided a separate, smaller correlation matrix evaluating Bitcoin against selected public-market assets.

Why It Matters

The inclusion of Bitcoin in JPMorgan's flagship long-term planning document marks a profound institutional shift from earlier Wall Street skepticism. By offering formal return assumptions across 10-to-15-year horizons, JPMorgan provides institutional fiduciaries with a standardized baseline to evaluate crypto exposure alongside traditional portfolios. However, the high volatility rating of 55% signals that major wealth managers will likely treat Bitcoin as a speculative satellite allocation rather than a core portfolio asset for the foreseeable future.
