Retail social sentiment surrounding Ethereum has surged to 2.05 bullish comments for every bearish one across X, Reddit, and Telegram, even as institutional investors pulled $85.4 million from US spot Ethereum ETFs on October 12 to extend a 10-day streak of net redemptions.
Data tracked by crypto analytics firm Santiment shows a sharp divergence between retail optimism and institutional ETF flows. While social chatter turns increasingly optimistic for ETH, total capital net outflows from US Ethereum ETFs have topped $780 million since September 29, according to data from SoSoValue.
Institutional ETF Outflows vs Social Excitement
The divergence between retail enthusiasm and institutional flows comes as crypto investment products see broad redemptions. On October 12, US Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $65.4 million, while XRP ETFs registered zero net flows, keeping total asset holdings at $1.55 billion.
Despite institutional selling, Ethereum social sentiment has turned overwhelmingly positive compared to earlier in the month, when sentiment metrics reflected widespread pessimism across the sector.
Key sentiment and flow metrics include:
- Ethereum: Social sentiment score of 2.05, with $85.4 million in ETF daily outflows.
- Bitcoin: Social sentiment score of 0.82, with $65.4 million in ETF daily outflows.
- XRP: Social sentiment score of 0.92, with zero net daily ETF flows.
Bitcoin and XRP Market Sentiment Deteriorates
In contrast to Ethereum, investor optimism surrounding Bitcoin and XRP has deteriorated sharply. Bitcoin's sentiment score fell to 0.82 after repeated failures to break $87,000 were followed by a pull back toward $81,000, coinciding with broad macro headwinds as Fed rate hike bets pushed Bitcoin down to $81,661. The decline triggered heavy market liquidations, as leveraged bullish traders lost $688.56 million in a single day.
Meanwhile, XRP recorded a sentiment score of 0.92 after experiencing a weekly price drop exceeding 9% and failing to maintain momentum above $1.40.
Addressing the sentiment setup, Santiment analysts noted: "Ethereum is suddenly the crowd favorite…Bitcoin is seeing the opposite setup…XRP is also deep in FUD." The analytics firm added that "from a contrarian perspective, BTC and XRP's fear is healthier than ETH's crowd excitement if prices begin recovering."
Why It Matters
The stark contrast between surging social FOMO and sustained institutional ETF outflows highlights a growing rift between retail expectations and institutional capital positioning. Historically, extreme retail enthusiasm during periods of persistent ETF redemptions can leave prices vulnerable if speculative buying fails to match structural institutional selling. Investors should watch whether incoming ETF flow data stabilizes, as a failure to stem the $780 million outflow trend could cap near-term upside for Ethereum.
