Bitcoin Settles at $84,500 After $600M Liquidations as QNT and NIGHT Gain 13%

Bitcoin (BTC) settled near $84,500 over the weekend following sharp volatility triggered by soft US economic data, while mid-cap tokens Quant (QNT) and NIGHT defied a broad market drawdown with 13% gains.

Bitcoin Volatility Triggers Massive Liquidations

The trading week was marked by intense price swings for Bitcoin. Early in the week, BTC repeatedly tested support below $83,000 before staging a rally. A mid-week surge triggered by Wednesday's PCE data release pushed the cryptocurrency from $83,000 to $85,600 within hours, though it was quickly rejected.

Momentum returned on Friday as a softer-than-expected US jobs report pushed Bitcoin past $87,000 for the first time in ten days. However, intense selling pressure caused a swift rejection. As crypto liquidations approached $600 million, BTC briefly fell below $84,000 before rebounding to $84,500. Bitcoin's market capitalization currently stands at $1.69 trillion, with its market dominance on CoinMarketCap (CMC) rising to 59%.

Altcoins Retreat as QNT and NIGHT Rally

While the total cryptocurrency market capitalization decreased by nearly 2% in 24 hours to $2.880 trillion, select tokens posted significant gains against the trend.

  • Quant (QNT) surged 13% to reach well over $260.
  • NIGHT climbed 13% to hit $0.50.
  • Ethereum (ETH) failed to hold support above $2,700.
  • XRP dropped 3.5%, slipping below $1.50.
  • Zcash (ZEC) dropped over 5% to sit just above $1,300.
  • DOGE, LINK, ADA, RAIN, XLM, and NEAR recorded daily losses across the board.

In contrast to broader altcoin weakness, Bitcoin's rejection after soft US data highlighted how capital continues to concentrate in select narratives and higher-dominance assets during macroeconomic turbulence.

Why It Matters

The violent whip-saw action following US macroeconomic data highlights a market heavily driven by short-term leverage rather than sustained spot accumulation. Despite favorable macroeconomic tailwinds from cooling inflation and a softening labor market, Bitcoin's failure to sustain breakout levels above $87,000 suggests overhead supply remains heavy. As Bitcoin dominance pushes up to 59%, altcoins are likely to remain under pressure unless major layer-1 assets reclaim key structural support levels like $2,700 for Ethereum.
