Bitcoin (BTC) dropped back below $86,000 after briefly reaching $87,200, failing to maintain upside momentum despite encouraging U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation figures and a weaker-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report. The asset remains up 1.9% on the week, trading at $85,670.
Macro Data Fails to Fuel Sustained Breakout
Earlier in the week, Bitcoin struggled near $85,000 resistance before falling back toward its key $83,000 support level. On Wednesday, a cooler-than-expected PCE print triggered an immediate surge to $85,600, but selling pressure erased those gains within minutes. A late-week push drove prices to $87,200 as broader macroeconomic conditions lowered expectations for additional Federal Reserve rate hikes, but BTC subsequently fell to $85,200.
Total cryptocurrency market capitalization sits at $3.050 trillion with $113 billion in 24-hour volume and a Bitcoin dominance rate of 56.6%. Major altcoins delivered mixed results: Ethereum (ETH) gained 0.4% to $2,710, while XRP dropped 4.8% to $1.51. Other prominent altcoins including ZEC, HYPE, BCH, and UNI also recorded weekly losses.
QNT and NIGHT Outperform Mid-Cap Market
Selective altcoins delivered strong outperformance despite overall market chop:
- Quant (QNT) posted a 160% weekly gain, reaching a peak near $300 after a temporary 300% surge.
- NIGHT gained 105% over the seven-day period, joining QNT as one of the few triple-digit gainers.
- Zcash (ZEC) slid 13% weekly to sit below $1,400, though it remains up 1,000% over the past year after topping $1,600.
- Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes forecasted that ETH could reach $10,000 by year-end.
Corporate Treasuries Expand Bitcoin Stashes
Corporate balance sheet accumulation continued throughout the week. Michael Saylor's Strategy purchased 1,665 BTC in its second consecutive weekly buy, raising its total holdings to 847,666 BTC. Asset manager Strive acquired 1,107 BTC, bringing its total treasury to 27,462 BTC.
Why It Matters
Bitcoin's inability to maintain gains above $87,000 despite favorable macroeconomic data underscores persistent overhead resistance and tight liquidity. While softer inflation and cooling employment numbers typically bolster risk assets by strengthening the case for monetary easing, immediate profit-taking continues to restrict breakouts. Traders should monitor whether the $83,000 support level remains intact as macro volatility continues into the fourth quarter.
