Bitcoin's long-term profitability metrics have retreated toward bear-market territory last recorded in late 2022, even as the asset trades around the $82,000 mark. In an October 22 update, on-chain analyst Amr Taha reported that Bitcoin's 365-day UTXO Block Profit/Loss Count Ratio average dropped to 13.6, standing just 14.1% above its November 21, 2022 reading of 11.92 when BTC traded near $16,000.
Cost Basis Disparities and Realized Capitalization
On-chain cost-basis data illustrates significant divergence among investor groups. Binance user deposit addresses feature a realized price of approximately $64,200, keeping BTC roughly 27.7% above their entry level. Conversely, new whales hold an average cost basis of $77,120, leaving them with a thin 6.3% cushion at the $82,000 reference price. Miner whales and long-term holder whales maintain lower realized price floors of $51,820 and $46,400, respectively.
Growth in Bitcoin's realized capitalization has also slowed notably. The metric's 30-day change stood at $12.93 billion on October 22, well below the $40 billion registered on October 15, 2025, and the $64 billion peak recorded on July 24 of that year. Taha highlighted that those prior peaks preceded a roughly 52% market decline, though the current positive figure confirms realized capitalization continues to expand.
Market Fluctuations and Profitability Supply
- UTXO Ratio Compression: The 365-day average ratio of 13.6 sits near the 11.92 level recorded during the $16,000 cycle bottom in 2022.
- Whale Entry Levels: New whale entries at $77,120 contrast sharply with long-term holder whales at $46,400.
- Distance From Peak: BTC remains 35% below its all-time high of over $126,000 and down 24% from one year ago.
Although BTC recently recovered above $83,000 after dropping toward $80,000, tracking data from CoinGecko placed the asset over $200 below $82,000. The asset has fallen nearly 2% over 24 hours and almost 4% over the past 30 days, following recent market volatility where Bitcoin fell to $81,652 after a leverage shakeout reminiscent of when an October 21 flush wiped out $91M in longs.
Offering a counter-perspective on October 22, analyst Facundo Fama noted that Bitcoin's supply in profit grew during Q3 2026. This marked the first bullish quarter following a downtrend since Q1 2023, a period when supply in profit expanded from 9 million BTC to over 14 million BTC ahead of a sustained bull trend through 2025.
Why It Matters
The narrowing gap in the 365-day UTXO profit ratio signals that higher nominal prices have not insulated recent buyers from profit margin compression. With new whales operating on a slim 6.3% margin above their $77,120 entry price, the market faces heightened vulnerability to localized selloffs if price dips below their cost basis. However, robust realized price cushions for long-term whales at $46,400 indicate that structural long-term conviction remains intact despite broader momentum cooling.
