Bitcoin (BTC) slipped below $82,000 as the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5.35%, touching a 24-year peak and pushing investors away from speculative crypto assets toward high-yielding government debt.
Treasury Yield Surge Pressures Crypto Assets
According to an October market analysis by exchange Bitunix, long-term US debt yields surged to levels not seen since 2002. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly hit 5.35%, while the 30-year yield reached approximately 5.7%. This spike in interest rate benchmarks followed the latest ISM services report, which showed its prices index expanding to 74.
Because government bonds provide fixed income backed by the US government while cryptocurrencies offer no yield, rising interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding digital assets. The selling pressure extended to publicly traded crypto equities as well, with shares of Strategy and Circle registering weekly price declines. The macro tightness comes even as technical analysts track whether Bitcoin signals a new bull cycle through long-term moving average recoveries.
Broad Market Decline Hits Altcoins and DeFi
The sell-off intensified across the broader altcoin market between October 3 and October 9. During this weekly period, Bitcoin declined 3.80%, Ethereum (ETH) dropped 8.39%, and XRP fell 7.09%. Data from Bitunix showed that only 20% of the top 300 tracked tokens recorded gains, yielding a median return of -5.18%.
Decentralized finance tokens experienced steep losses, led by Uniswap (UNI) with an 18.37% drop and PancakeSwap (CAKE) with a 15.92% loss. Conversely, speculative momentum drove The Sandbox (SAND) up 57.71% over the week (and over 80% across a 30-day period) despite minimal changes in underlying project fundamentals. Commodity markets diverged from crypto, as Gold held near $4,200 and Brent crude traded above $100 per barrel.
September Inflation Report Set as Next Catalyst
Crypto traders are focused on October 14, when the US releases the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for September. Bitunix highlighted an anticipated annual CPI reading of 3.6%, representing an increase from the previous 3.4% figure.
- 10-year Treasury yields climbed above 5.35%, while 30-year yields hit 5.7%.
- Bitcoin fell 3.80% week-over-week, dropping below the $82,000 mark.
- Top 300 digital assets logged a median weekly return of -5.18%, with UNI dropping 18.37%.
- September CPI inflation is expected to rise to 3.6% from 3.4% on October 14.
Why It Matters
The ongoing pressure on crypto valuations highlights how tightly digital asset markets remain bound to US macroeconomic conditions and Fed monetary expectations. If September CPI numbers exceed forecasts, persistent yield expansion could lock Bitcoin into a consolidated range and delay broader market capital rotation into altcoins. Traders should watch how bond yields adjust immediately following the CPI release as the primary signal for crypto price direction.
