Yuga Labs Expands Bored Apes to Solana With Mudwater Trading Card Game

Yuga Labs has expanded its flagship franchise to Solana with the launch of Mudwater, a physical and digital trading card game featuring Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) artwork across 2.4 million total cards. While the primary BAYC profile picture collection remains hosted on Ethereum, the strategic launch tests cross-chain demand at a time when traditional NFT trading volumes face pressure.

To facilitate the release, Yuga Labs airdropped an ERC-6551 Totem token to every BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) holder on Ethereum. The ERC-6551 standard turns each individual NFT into a token-bound wallet, enabling holders to claim their allocated card packs directly.

Pack Allocations and Tokenomics

The total supply for the Mudwater set is strictly capped at 10,000 boxes. Each box contains 24 packs, and every individual pack holds 10 cards, resulting in 240,000 packs and 2.4 million cards altogether. Claim rights are divided based on original collection ownership:

  • BAYC holders can claim 10 packs per NFT, securing 100,000 packs or roughly 42% of the total set prior to public market trading.
  • MAYC holders can claim 2 packs per NFT.
  • The full collection incorporates 120 BAYC art pieces, featuring digital versions, physical editions, and foil treatments.
  • At the top of the collection tier sit 8 serialized cracked-ice 1/1 Bored Ape cards, designated by the team as the ultimate grails of the set.

Initial secondary market trading for Mudwater packs, individual cards, and Totems has already commenced on OpenSea, with plans to allow holders to upgrade individual packs into full boxes and cases at a later date.

Cross-Chain Expansion and Industry Context

The decision to host the trading card game on Solana highlights a shift toward alternative high-speed networks, similar to how the Solana RWA market expands to record levels. The launch arrives during a challenging period for traditional profile picture projects. Market cap figures for digital collectibles dropped sharply alongside broader crypto pullbacks earlier this year, prompting industry figures like Blockstream CEO Adam Back to criticize high-profile secondary purchases, including Justin Bieber's $1.3 million BAYC acquisition. Concurrently, major trading hubs like Blur have announced website shutdowns.

However, tokenized collectibles experienced growth during the second quarter while other sectors contracted. Yuga Labs also cautioned users to verify all claim links through official channels to prevent phishing exploits, referencing its previous white-hat rescue operation that protected compromised user assets.

Why It Matters

This release represents a crucial test of brand mobility in the Web3 ecosystem. By launching on Solana while keeping parent assets on Ethereum, Yuga Labs is attempting to tap into Solana's fast, low-cost transaction infrastructure without diluting the prestige of its core Ethereum collections. If successful, this hybrid model could establish a blueprint for other blue-chip digital IP owners looking to capture liquidity across multiple blockchain networks.
