Spot Bitcoin ETFs Shed $729 Million in Two Days as Rate Cut Hopes Fade

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $729 million in net outflows across Wednesday and Thursday, reversing early-week gains as hawkish Federal Reserve expectations and geopolitical friction triggered market uncertainty.

The sudden shift in institutional sentiment pushed Bitcoin's price down over 3% over a seven-day period to a little over $82,688, interrupting a push that saw the benchmark asset close in on $90,000 last week.

ETF Flows Shift After Early-Week Inflows

Data from Farside Investors reveals that institutional investors began the trading week by liquidating nearly $90 million in spot Bitcoin ETF shares on Monday. Momentum briefly recovered on Tuesday with $119 million in net inflows before heavy selling resumed. Over the next two sessions, funds managed by BlackRock, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, and ARK 21Shares incurred combined redemptions totaling $729 million.

The severe outflow sequence coincides with broader headwinds following heavier ETF selling earlier this month. Key market dynamics behind the shift include:

  • Federal Reserve Policy: Speculation that the Fed may raise interest rates has curtailed liquidity expectations across risk assets.
  • Oil Price Spikes: Brent crude oil prices rose following fresh attacks on shipping tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Diplomatic Deadlocks: Remarks from U.S. President Trump indicating that negotiations with Iran were failing reinforced concerns of prolonged conflict in the Middle East.

Macro Headwinds and Historical Context

Bitcoin has shown heightened sensitivity to global macroeconomic triggers throughout 2026. Previous military action involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran elevated oil prices, driving expectations of tight central bank policy. Higher energy prices typically fuel inflation fears, encouraging central banks to maintain or elevate interest rates.

Despite hawkish commentary and a quarter percentage point interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve last month, Bitcoin managed a temporary rally in the immediate aftermath. Following strong performance across August and September, analysts have increasingly signaled the potential onset of a bull cycle.

However, at $82,688, Bitcoin currently trades 34% below its record peak of $126,080 established in October—a key milestone as the asset remains 34% below its peak. Even so, the cryptocurrency has demonstrated resilience over short timeframes, recovering nearly 2% over the past 24 hours as traders enter October, historically known as "Uptober" for its positive seasonal returns.

Why It Matters

The abrupt reversal in spot ETF flows illustrates how sensitive institutional crypto products remain to broader macroeconomic variables, particularly energy costs and central bank rate policy. While retail sentiment often focuses on seasonal trends like "Uptober," institutional capital continues to recalibrate based on Treasury yields and geopolitical stability. Investors should monitor upcoming inflation reports and Fed commentary, as sustained rate concerns could prolong ETF capital flight and cap upside momentum in the near term.
