MoneyGram Expands Blockchain Role as Institutional Validator on XDC Network

85-year-old remittance provider MoneyGram, which serves roughly 60 million customers across nearly 500,000 retail locations, has officially joined the XDC Network as an institutional validator on October 15, 2026.

By taking on a validator role on the Layer-1 network focused on payments, trade finance, and real-world assets, MoneyGram will stake XDC tokens to actively confirm transactions, maintain the distributed ledger, and participate in network governance.

Key Takeaways

  • Node Expansion: MoneyGram adds XDC Network to its infrastructure roster after becoming a node operator on Midnight and a validator on Tempo and Solana.
  • Institutional Peer Group: Over 20 institutional operators validate XDC, including SBI Holdings, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO Global, Clear Street, Hex Trust, and Taurus.
  • Existing Footprint: MoneyGram first partnered with public blockchains in 2019, used Stellar for USDC cash conversions since October 2021, and launched its MGUSD stablecoin on Stellar in June 2026.

From Settlement End-User to Network Operator

MoneyGram's transition from utilizing existing chain liquidity to running validator infrastructure marks a significant shift in corporate crypto adoption. While its dollar-pegged MGUSD stablecoin continues to operate on Stellar, validating XDC requires holding native asset stakes while on-chain activity expands.

"Every transaction on XDC is secured by our validators, and each institution that joins reinforces the infrastructure on which the future of global payments will be built," stated Ritesh Kakkad, Co-Founder of XDC Network.

"By joining XDC Network as a validator, we're contributing directly to the infrastructure supporting the network while continuing to build toward more open, interoperable ways to move money globally," added Luke Tuttle, Chief Product and Technology Officer at MoneyGram.

Why It Matters

MoneyGram's decision to stake capital and run validators across multiple protocols highlights how traditional remittance giants are hedging their technological architecture. Rather than routing all transaction flow through a single ledger, MoneyGram is securing seats at the governance tables of distinct networks targeting privacy, consumer scaling, and trade finance like XDC's real-world asset focus.

The key metric to monitor next is whether MoneyGram eventually transitions consumer payment volumes or MGUSD issuance onto XDC, shifting its involvement from governance to active transactional settlement.
