Ethereum Drops to 2-Month Low at $2,315 as Wintermute Builds $18.3M Short Position

Ethereum (ETH) dropped $200 in a single day to reach a two-month low of $2,315 on Bitstamp on Thursday morning, marking its lowest price level since its mid-August breakout rally.

Wintermute Shorts and $130M ETF Outflows

The sharp decline coincides with a surge in short positions across derivative markets following a higher-than-expected U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading. Analysis from Daan Crypto Traders highlighted that heavy downside shorts emerged with little risk of an immediate short squeeze.

Onchain data from Onchain Lens revealed that institutional market maker Wintermute has built substantial short exposure on Hyperliquid. Wintermute holds $87.34 million in total open positions at address 0xecb63caa47c7c4e77f60f1ce858cf28dc2b82b00, with 86.4% allocated to the short side ($75.45 million) and 13.6% in longs ($11.89 million). The firm's largest short positions include $18.33 million in ETH, $12.07 million in SOL, and $10.72 million in SP500, generating an unrealized PnL of +$3.97 million and a lifetime PnL of +$209.79 million on the platform.

Institutional demand via spot products also flipped negative. After capturing nearly $25 million in net inflows on Tuesday, spot Ethereum ETFs experienced almost $130 million in net outflows the next day. This rapid capital withdrawal compromised recent price floors after Ethereum defended $2.4K support.

Market-Wide Liquidations Exceed $293M

The market downturn sparked severe leverage wipes across trading venues. According to CoinGlass data, $293 million in total crypto positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with long trades suffering 92% of the losses. Ethereum led all single-asset liquidations, while Bitcoin (BTC) ranked second with $203 million in wiped-out positions.

Macroeconomic headwinds contributed heavily to the selling pressure. Asian equity benchmarks posted deep losses, led by an 8% plunge in the KOSPI and a 6% decline in the Nikkei, alongside market reactions to U.S. non-nuclear weapons reporting targeting Iran.

Key Takeaways

  • ETH Spot Decline: Ethereum fell $200 to $2,315 on Bitstamp, touching its lowest valuation since mid-August.
  • Wintermute Short Exposure: Market maker Wintermute holds $18.33 million in ETH shorts within a $75.45 million short portfolio on Hyperliquid.
  • ETF Reversal & Liquidations: Spot ETH ETFs lost almost $130 million in a single day, while total market liquidations reached $293 million (92% longs).

Why It Matters

This breakdown highlights how concentrated short positioning by major market makers like Wintermute can accelerate downside momentum during periods of global macro stress. With long positions severely flushed out across derivative exchanges, recovery hinges on spot ETF flows turning positive and sell-side pressure subsiding on decentralized platforms. Investors should closely watch whether Ethereum can hold the $2,300 structural floor or if extended ETF redemptions force a deeper retest of summer liquidity zones.
