Elice Group Plunges 32% in KOSDAQ Debut Despite Raising $151M

South Korean AI cloud provider Elice Group suffered a sharp decline in its trading debut on Tuesday, with its shares sinking as much as 32% to 61,400 won despite raising 201 billion won ($151 million) in KOSDAQ’s largest initial public offering (IPO) of 2026.

AI Market Sentiment Overwhelms Strong Financials

Elice Group set its IPO pricing on October 6, prior to the recent global downturn in artificial intelligence equities. Institutional demand had originally surged, with orders reaching 388 times the available shares. The company had also reported solid financial momentum for the first half of the year, as revenue tripled to 34 billion won alongside an operating profit of 10 billion won.

However, those strong fundamentals could not insulate the stock from a broader regional retreat in technology sentiment. South Korea's benchmark KOSPI dropped 3.5% on Tuesday morning, extending a monthly decline of more than 21% and reducing its 2026 gains to 31%. Commenting on the shift in market appetite, Kiwoom Securities analyst Kim Hak-joon noted that "no one knows how large AI demand will become," adding that "even today's demand is hard to estimate."

Reversal of Summer AI Rally and Focus on Anthropic

The slump marks a distinct shift from earlier Asian AI listings. On July 27, memory chipmaker CXMT jumped approximately 470% during its Shanghai debut after raising $8.6 billion, though it has since dropped 18% from its peak following a 6.5% decline on Monday. Similarly, robot manufacturer Unitree opened 629% above its IPO price on August 19.

Industry experts view the selloff as a critical repricing event ahead of major upcoming listings, including Anthropic's scheduled November IPO and OpenAI's planned listing next year. Anthropic, which has committed at least $518 billion to cloud and computing capacity over a decade, saw valuation discussions at its October 14 investor day shift down to $1.5 trillion—from previous expectations near $2 trillion—after third-quarter revenue growth slowed to 45%. Prominent figures such as Paul Tudor Jones, Michael Burry, and Ray Dalio have recently issued warnings about an AI valuation bubble, with Burry pointing out that Anthropic's valuation could theoretically buy 78 S&P 500 companies.

Ke Yan, head of research at Shenton Research, stated: "Elice's debut shows the AI infrastructure trade has moved from 'build at any cost' to 'who is paying and for how long'. Until the AI labs that rent capacity show they can fund their compute commitments, new listings across the region will likely be priced in that risk premium."

Key Takeaways

  • Elice Group raised 201 billion won ($151 million) in KOSDAQ's largest 2026 IPO before falling up to 32% to 61,400 won.
  • Despite institutional demand reaching 388x and first-half revenue tripling to 34 billion won, broader market weakness dragged down the debut.
  • The fall reflects growing investor scrutiny over AI compute monetization ahead of Anthropic's November IPO.

Why It Matters

This sharp market rejection underscores a fundamental pivot in investor sentiment from speculative AI capacity growth toward proven cash flows and long-term customer viability. As cloud infrastructure providers face newly attached risk premiums, upcoming mega-cap listings like Anthropic will encounter unprecedented pressure to prove that major AI labs can fund their massive multi-billion-dollar compute commitments amid slowing quarterly revenue growth.
