KOSPI Drops 3.5% at Open as 2026 Rally Shrinks From 116% to 31%

South Korea's Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 3.5% at Tuesday’s open, extending a prolonged sell-off driven by tumbling semiconductor shares and broader concerns over artificial intelligence spending. The decline reduced the benchmark index's 2026 gain to approximately 31%, down sharply from a record peak gain of roughly 116% reached in June.

Semiconductor Plunge and Macro Pressures

The benchmark index now sits about 39% below its June record high following severe monthly contractions, including a 22% loss in July and an additional 17% drop through Oct. 16. The weakness stems largely from memory chip titans Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together represented 44% of the KOSPI weight in May. Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 16, Samsung Electronics dropped 19.74%, while SK Hynix plummeted 28.38%, echoing broader tech market stress as chip stocks face prolonged decline.

Investor confidence in AI infrastructure was further shaken after falling bond prices at cloud provider CoreWeave fueled credit anxieties across the tech sector, similar to recent market turbulence where CoreWeave bond yields hit 15%. Foreign investors executed net sales for seven consecutive sessions through Oct. 15. The retreat intensified on Oct. 15 when hotter-than-expected US inflation data triggered a single-day crash of 7.57%, dragging the KOSPI down to 5,554.22. Although institutional buying managed a 1.76% rebound to 5,768.01 on Monday despite opening 3.17% lower, selling pressure returned at Tuesday's open.

Leverage and Forced Liquidations

Excessive retail leverage has compounded the stock market's downturn. Outstanding margin loans on the exchange peaked at 38.63 trillion won on June 24. As share prices dissolved, forced liquidations by brokerages exceeded 50 billion won for four consecutive trading days through Oct. 16, accelerating downward momentum as leveraged positions were unwound.

  • KOSPI opened down 3.5%, cutting 2026 year-to-date gains from 116% in June to 31%.
  • Samsung Electronics fell 19.74% and SK Hynix fell 28.38% between Oct. 1 and Oct. 16.
  • Margin loan liquidations exceeded 50 billion won per day across four straight sessions through Oct. 16.

Why It Matters

The steep correction in South Korea’s benchmark index serves as a critical bellwether for global technology valuations and AI infrastructure buildouts. Because memory chip producers dominate the KOSPI, the index effectively operates as a high-beta proxy for international capital expenditure in hardware. If institutional and foreign capital outflows persist alongside forced margin liquidations, Asian equities may face broader systemic pressure until semiconductor revenue visibility improves.
