Copper Rebounds Above Support as Anthropic IPO Filing Triggers AI Stock Rally

Copper prices recovered above a critical April support trendline on Tuesday, erasing losses from the prior week as AI-related equities rallied following Anthropic's initial public offering filing. The industrial metal climbed to within roughly 3.5% of its September record as markets linked future data center expansion directly to copper demand.

  • LME copper rose 1.1% to $14,487.50 per tonne, marking its highest level since October 16.
  • Anthropic's public filing disclosed $587 billion in compute and lease obligations, lifting Nvidia stock by 2.4% and the Nasdaq by 0.8%.
  • China's Yangshan premium reached $188 per tonne, a near 13-year high, as Shanghai exchange inventories fell over 25% in a single week.

AI Expansion Fuels Industrial Metal Demand

The direct link between technology equities and physical metal demand stems from the massive electrical wiring infrastructure required to build modern AI campuses. When Claude developer Anthropic made its public IPO filing disclosing $587 billion in commitments, semiconductor and hardware supply chains rallied in tandem.

This connection previously pressed prices lower on October 22, when a broader pullback in technology stocks pushed copper below its April trendline. James Harte, an analyst at Tickmill, observed that "the recent rout in AI stocks hit copper prices hard, reflecting just how sensitive the metal has become towards the AI sector." Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, similarly described the filing as "a referendum on the entire AI trade."

Asian Supply Tightens While US Stockpiles Cap Upside

Physical market metrics present a diverging picture between regions. ING commodities strategist Ewa Manthey expects tight physical supply in Asia to offer firm price support, especially with Chinese smelters pausing operations for maintenance. However, broker Sucden Financial highlighted that expanding inventories inside US warehouses continue to limit headline price momentum.

On technical charts, copper trades near $6.72 per pound, testing a resistance threshold between $6.64 and $6.72. A daily close above this barrier would reopen a path toward the $6.95 all-time record. If the current rally stalls, the 0.382 Fibonacci support level near $6.31 represents the next major downside defense zone, while the momentum-tracking Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits near 53.

Why It Matters

The tightening price correlation between artificial intelligence investment and raw copper highlights how digital hardware trends now directly drive physical commodity markets. As mega-cap firms lock in hundreds of billions of dollars in long-term compute obligations, energy grid expansions and data center wiring are creating tangible supply strain in global metal markets. Investors must now watch Wednesday's Federal Reserve rate decision alongside upcoming Big Tech earnings to determine if macroeconomic conditions can sustain copper's attempt at new highs.
