Anthropic Discloses $131.7B Cash and $587B Commitments in S-1 IPO Filing

Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic held $131.7 billion in cash and short-term investments as of June 30, eclipsing the combined cash reserves of Nvidia and Apple ahead of its upcoming initial public offering, according to an S-1 registration filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday.

Record Reserves Facing $587 Billion in Long-Term Obligations

The S-1 filing details $112.4 billion in cash and cash equivalents alongside $19.3 billion in short-term investments. According to data from CNBC and S&P Capital IQ, only Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet hold larger cash reserves among non-bank U.S. corporations.

However, the disclosure highlights $587 billion in total obligations. This includes $321.4 billion in undiscounted commitments for leases that have not yet started, as well as $265.6 billion in fixed or guaranteed spending minimums. Current liquid assets cover roughly 22% of these combined commitments, which stretch up to 20 years through 2045. Furthermore, contracts revised or signed after June 30 add an estimated $245 billion in minimum future payments.

Anthropic powers its AI model, Claude, using specialized hardware from Nvidia, Amazon, Google, and AMD, typically ordering computing capacity 12 to 18 months in advance. The filing notes that these compute contracts contain "take-or-pay" terms, requiring payment regardless of whether the capacity is ultimately utilized. This dynamic comes as broader tech markets react to Anthropic's IPO filing and semiconductor market impacts.

Financial Performance and Nasdaq Listing Details

During the first half of the year, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue. The company recorded an operating loss of $693 million, alongside $1.6 billion in adjusted operating income—a company-defined performance metric.

Anthropic has formally applied to list its shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT. Reports indicate the public offering could top $100 billion, which could push total cash beyond $230 billion. However, existing investors plan to sell shares into the offering, meaning Anthropic will not collect all gross proceeds. Specific offering terms are expected in about two weeks.

  • $131.7 Billion Liquid Reserves: Cash and short-term investments top Nvidia and Apple combined as of June 30.
  • $587 Billion Long-Term Commitments: Total lease and spending obligations extend through 2045, with current cash covering 22%.
  • H1 Financial Results: Generated $16.3 billion in revenue against a $693 million operating loss and $1.6 billion in adjusted operating income.
  • Nasdaq Ticker Reserved: Applied to list under ANT, with offering details expected within two weeks.

Why It Matters

Anthropic's massive take-or-pay commitments illustrate the unprecedented capital intensity required to compete at the frontier of artificial intelligence, tying the company's long-term solvency directly to sustained multi-decade compute demand. For financial markets and technology investors tracking capital expenditure flows, these multi-billion-dollar minimum commitments lock in long-term revenue streams for hardware providers like Nvidia and AMD regardless of short-term market volatility. However, with total commitments outstripping liquid reserves by more than four to one over a 20-year horizon, any sharp deceleration in enterprise AI adoption could introduce significant balance sheet pressure.
