AI Agent Payments Reach $119,947 Across 6.4 Million Micro-Transactions, BeInCrypto Report Shows

Between July 23 and August 26, artificial intelligence agents executed 6.4 million x402 payments totaling $119,947 across the Base and Solana networks, according to BeInCrypto Research's State of AI Agent Payments 2026 report.

Micropayments Lead Early AI Agent Activity

Data from the report shows that the average payment executed by AI agents was approximately 1.9 cents, with more than 90% of transactions valued at less than a penny. These micro-transactions primarily supported task-based requests such as gathering web search data and checking airline reward seat availability. As corporate users ramp up AI expenditures, machine-to-machine micro-transacting is emerging as a core infrastructure primitive.

Out of 19 products and workflows examined in an x402 catalogue review, 14 were configured to act within pre-agreed permissions without requiring real-time user approval for each transaction. In its financial readiness assessment, the report assigned micropayments a score of 60.7 out of 100, compared to 39.1 out of 100 for trading and investment agents.

Delegation Limits and Trading Execution

Crypto exchange Zoomex, which sponsored the report while BeInCrypto Research retained full editorial control, highlighted that delegating micro-expenses differs vastly from portfolio management. "Giving an agent permission to spend 40 cents is very different from allowing it to manage your portfolio," Zoomex stated.

To address portfolio risk while leveraging tools like Claude AI agents, Zoomex utilizes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) service connecting software like Claude or Cursor to exchange features. Fernando Lillo Aranda told researchers, "Our MCP enables AI assistants to retrieve market information, analyse positions and prepare trading instructions, while still keeping the user in control through confirmation before execution." Zoomex separately documented capacity for up to 60,000 order requests per second across approved institutional account setups.

Key Takeaways

  • 6.4 million x402 payments transferred $119,947 between July 23 and August 26 on Base and Solana.
  • Average payment size was 1.9 cents, with over 90% of transfers coming in under 1 cent.
  • Financial readiness scored 60.7 out of 100 for micropayments, but only 39.1 out of 100 for autonomous trading agents.
  • 14 out of 19 reviewed workflows operated with pre-agreed autonomous permissions.

Why It Matters

While automated bots drive significant Solana volume, the report underscores a fundamental boundary between low-value data retrieval and portfolio management. Market participants remain hesitant to grant fully autonomous trading authority, favoring human-in-the-loop confirmation systems to mitigate risk. Over the next 12 months, industry adoption will likely focus on defined tasks like rebalancing within set limits and collateral management before fully autonomous investment tools take hold.
