Zano Rolls Back One Month of Blockchain Transactions Following Gateway Exploit

Privacy-focused network Zano has executed an emergency blockchain rollback, erasing roughly one month of confirmed transactions following a critical security flaw. The team released an emergency update on Sept. 27 that restarted the chain from block 3,833,000, effectively resetting state to Aug. 26 at 15:50 UTC and removing all subsequent ledger activity.

Gateway Vulnerability Triggers Deep State Reset

The core development team reported that a Gateway Address vulnerability allowed unauthorized amounts of ZANO and its native stablecoin, Freedom Dollar (fUSD), to enter circulation. While the bug permitted unbacked asset minting, the team confirmed that wallet spend keys and ordinary transaction privacy were not compromised.

Because the rollback strictly affects the Zano ledger, transactions settled on external networks—such as cross-chain trades involving USDT or DAI—cannot be automatically reversed. This creates severe discrepancies for off-chain or cross-chain counterparties. Similar challenges surrounding cross-chain asset movement and tracking have surfaced across the sector, such as when hackers laundered $387M via THORChain following major exchange breaches.

Developer and Personal Funds Pledged for Recovery

To cover user losses, the project plans to utilize the network's developer fund, contributions from committed partners, and personal funds from team members. However, the team has not yet published specific funding amounts, eligibility rules, or a concrete payment timetable. Overall ZANO token supply and emission parameters will remain unchanged on the recovered chain.

Here are the critical facts surrounding the Zano chain restoration:

  • Rollback Point: Reverted to block 3,833,000 (Aug. 26 at 15:50 UTC).
  • Exploit Cause: A Gateway Address flaw created fake ZANO and fUSD supply.
  • Fund Sources: Developer reserves, team personal funds, and contributor backing.
  • User Action: Users are advised to save transaction IDs and open support tickets; no official claims process is live yet.

Exchanges, wallets, and payment gateways are currently integrating the recovered chain, and users are urged to verify that service operators have updated their software before sending transactions.

Why It Matters

Deep blockchain rollbacks are exceedingly rare because they disrupt immutability and create significant trust deficits across decentralized finance. By erasing 32 days of valid transactions to neutralize synthetic token minting, Zano has prioritized economic solvency over ledger permanence. How efficiently the team compensates victims using personal and developer funds will set a critical precedent for smaller Layer-1 privacy chains attempting to recover from systemic smart contract vulnerabilities.
