XRP Spot Volume Drops $1.94B as Futures Dominance Reaches 7.9x Spot

Centralized exchange spot trading volume for XRP dropped by $1.943 billion between August 26 and October 11, according to data compiled by CryptoQuant. The sharp decline in spot liquidity comes as futures trading takes on a larger role in driving price action.

CEX Spot Activity Contracts as Leverage Rises

The fall in spot volume was observed across major exchanges. On Binance, seven-day average spot volume fell from $597 million to $168 million, marking a $429 million drop as XRP spot turnover dropped on Binance. Other centralized exchanges recorded an even larger decline, with combined volume falling from $2 billion to $485.8 million—a $1.514 billion reduction that was 3.53 times greater than Binance's drop.

This shift is reflected in Binance's spot-to-futures volume ratio, which dropped from 31% on September 26 to 12.7% on October 11. Futures volume is now roughly 7.9 times spot volume, up from 3.2 times fifteen days prior. The metric is approaching its August 16 low of 11%, when XRP was priced below $0.99. While XRP trades around $1.40 today, spot activity has not recovered alongside the price. CryptoQuant noted that traders may be waiting on the sidelines for lower entry levels, noting a similar setup preceded a price rally in mid-August.

Institutional Inflows and Nasdaq Listing Provide Counterweight

Despite declining CEX spot activity, institutional channels continue to absorb supply:

  • US-listed spot XRP ETFs logged $11.31 million in net inflows last week ($3.14 million on October 6 and $8.17 million on October 8), despite three trading days with zero activity.
  • Cumulative net ETF inflows reached a new record of $1.8 billion, marking 13 consecutive weeks of positive flows totaling over $300 million since mid-July.
  • Evernorth is scheduled to list on Nasdaq under ticker XRPN on October 12 following its business combination with Armada Acquisition Corp. II.
  • Evernorth raised over $1 billion through its transaction and private placements, backed by $300 million in gross cash proceeds earmarked for institutional yield strategies, on-chain credit, and XRP infrastructure.

As Evernorth debuts on Nasdaq, the firm plans to actively deploy capital rather than passively hold tokens in treasury.

Why It Matters

The growing divergence between spot volume and futures activity indicates that recent price movements are increasingly driven by short-term derivative speculation rather than spot accumulation. While leverage can sustain price rallies temporarily, durable market expansions generally require strong spot demand on exchanges. However, steady ETF inflows and structural spot buying from institutional treasury vehicles like Evernorth offer an alternative absorption mechanism that could support market fundamentals despite low exchange liquidity.
