Starlink Powers Stock Rallies as SpaceX Posts $5.25B Connectivity Revenue and United Expands Fleet Integration

United Airlines ($UAL) and SpaceX saw their stock prices surge by more than 6% following their third-quarter earnings releases, highlighting the growing financial impact of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service across commercial aviation and global connectivity.

Key Q3 Earnings Highlights & Starlink Metrics

  • SpaceX Connectivity Revenue: Reached $5.25 billion in Q3, representing a 69% annual increase, with operating income nearly doubling to $2.37 billion.
  • SpaceX Total Financials: Reported $14.6 billion in total revenue, $4.4 billion in net income, and $7.56 billion in AI division sales.
  • United Airlines Fleet Integration: Deployed Starlink across more than 640 aircraft, adding approximately 3 planes per day, with over 5.4 million passengers experiencing the service in September.
  • United Q3 Financials: Delivered record revenue of $17.88 billion (versus $17.89 billion estimated, up 17.4% YoY) and adjusted EPS of $2.54 (versus $2.59 estimated, down 8.6% YoY).

Commercial Advantage for United Airlines

United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby noted during the carrier's earnings release that Starlink is actively helping win market share. "We are winning new long-term, brand-loyal United customers because they are trying us for Starlink," Kirby stated. The airline offers the service free to MileagePlus members on about half of its flights, and customer-service scores on Starlink-equipped aircraft are nearly double those using alternative Wi-Fi systems.

Although Kirby acknowledged during Wednesday's earnings call that passenger-switching evidence remains largely anecdotal and unquantified, United expects Starlink to boost revenue per available seat mile by 2027. The airline projects 87% fleet coverage by June and full fleet availability by year-end. United reported Q3 adjusted pre-tax income of $1.11 billion (matching estimates), adjusted operating income of $1.23 billion (versus $1.26 billion estimated), and adjusted net income of $833 million (versus $867 million estimated).

SpaceX Profit Engine and Broader Momentum

For SpaceX, satellite connectivity has established itself as the company's primary operating profit driver, even as its AI unit generated $7.56 billion in Q3 sales. The financial momentum coincides with broader investor interest following recent SpaceX Q3 earnings reports and ongoing discussion surrounding Elon Musk's potential Tesla merger.

Why It Matters

These earnings releases demonstrate that satellite internet has transitioned from an capital-intensive infrastructure bet into a powerful profit engine and customer acquisition tool. For SpaceX, Starlink provides recurring, high-margin cash flow to fund heavy capital expenditures across space exploration and artificial intelligence. For commercial airlines, low-Earth-orbit connectivity is turning into a critical brand differentiator that directly influences consumer loyalty and passenger choice.
