Starknet (STRK) dropped 27.9% in 24 hours to $0.08675, becoming the worst performer among the top 300 cryptocurrencies as broader market pressure and an impending $11 million token unlock cooled its recent momentum. Despite the sharp pullback, the token maintains a 213.82% gain over the past month following proposals to transition into a standalone quantum-resistant Layer 1 network.
Quantum Proposal and Network Activity Surge
The recent rally gathered momentum following an October 8 announcement on X, where Starknet revealed plans to evaluate moving from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent Layer 1 protocol by 2027. Starknet co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson reinforced the vision on October 11, citing strong community support for a quantum-safe network architecture.
The announcement sparked a sharp price climb to an intraday peak of $0.1265 on October 11, matching levels last seen in early December. The surge came as Starknet tested resistance near $0.12 alongside major altcoin gains.
Network metrics surged alongside the price rally:
- New Network Growth: Reached a single-day record of 1,166 new STRK wallet addresses.
- Active Addresses: Peaked at 2,822 on October 11, eclipsing the 2,579 active addresses recorded on February 21, 2024, when STRK reached its all-time high of $4.41.
- Whale Concentration: The top 10 addresses held roughly 7.09 billion STRK, their highest cumulative balance since April.
According to analytics platform Santiment, the sudden address spike signalled a classic FOMO setup as retail buyers rushed in near local highs right before a 4% decline in total crypto market capitalization triggered a retrace.
Upcoming $11 Million Token Unlock
Pressure on STRK could intensify as a scheduled supply injection approaches on October 15. Data from Tokenomist indicates that 127 million STRK—representing 3.37% of the circulating supply—will be released into market circulation.
The unlock allocates 66.61 million STRK to early contributors and 60.39 million STRK to early investors, representing over $11 million at current valuations. This distribution forms part of a linear monthly schedule running through March 2027. With STRK still holding significant monthly profits, potential profit-taking by early recipients could test market liquidity.
Why It Matters
The confluence of massive token unlocks and structural network changes tests whether fundamental development promises can sustain valuation gains. While transitioning to a quantum-resistant Layer 1 provides a compelling long-term narrative, short-term price dynamics remain heavily dictated by supply inflation and broader market liquidity. Whether whale entities continue absorbing released tokens will serve as a crucial indicator for STRK's price stability through the remainder of October.
