Small Crypto Wallets Struggle for Revenue Without In-App Swaps, ChangeNOW Executive Warns

Small cryptocurrency wallet providers face serious revenue struggles if they rely strictly on asset storage rather than integrated transactional features. Speaking at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, Yana Mar, Head of B2B and Partnerships at ChangeNOW, warned that wallets lose critical fees when users exit to swap tokens elsewhere, emphasizing that "the community itself doesn't pay" for basic storage.

Monetization Strategies and Regional Niche Focus

To generate sustainable revenue, ChangeNOW advises early-stage wallets to integrate built-in functionality such as fiat ramps, token swaps, staking, and trading. Building custom infrastructure from scratch places heavy financial strain on small development teams. Instead, Mar recommended plugging into third-party exchange APIs to launch features rapidly and capture volume.

Smaller developers can differentiate themselves against dominant providers by targeting specific audiences or geographic regions. For instance, the ChangeNOW Fast Track participant Dreamster caters directly to music enthusiasts, enabling users to purchase Digital Music Assets, own shares of individual songs, stream music directly in-app, and sell shares back at any point. Mar also pointed to competitive advantages like custom security features, rapid deployment within one week, and high-quality cross-chain swap routing—noting that ChangeNOW executes 98% of swaps within approximately 0.5% slippage.

Operational Support, Revenue Sharing, and Security Risk

Through its Free Fast Track program launched in March, ChangeNOW allows early-stage wallets to earn swap revenue shares starting at 0.4% alongside marketing benefits like press releases, podcasts, and event presence. Under this arrangement, wallet developers handle primary client relations while the underlying exchange manages technical troubleshooting using transaction IDs—even for user errors like missing memos or incorrect network deposits.

Key Takeaways:

  • Revenue loss: Wallets miss out on fees when users leave the app to swap, as storage alone brings zero income.
  • Fast Track model: ChangeNOW's API integration offers revenue shares starting at 0.4% for participating wallets.
  • Security priority: Industry losses from hacks reached roughly $1 billion over six months, with PeckShield reporting $766.49 million lost in September alone—including $387 million from the Bitget exploit.

Why It Matters

As major wallet providers expand into zero-fee stablecoin swaps and synthetic stock trading, smaller apps must focus on niche user experiences and specialized asset routing to survive. Partnering with third-party liquidity providers offers lean teams immediate revenue share without massive infrastructure overhead. However, maintaining strict security and trust remains essential, particularly as security breaches continue to threaten wallet adoption across the broader industry.
