Samsung Stock Drops 3% Despite Record $80 Billion Operating Profit Driven by AI Chips

Samsung Electronics shares fell 2.69% to 235,500 won at 10:11 a.m. Korea time on Thursday, turning lower shortly after the tech giant reported a record quarterly operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion (approximately $80 billion). The pullback followed a 9% surge on Wednesday, which was driven by rival SK Hynix's record financial results and capital return plan.

Memory Division Delivers Record Profit Amid Consumer Hardware Losses

While overall revenue expanded 14% quarter-over-quarter to KRW 195.3 trillion, earnings performance diverged sharply across Samsung's corporate divisions. The chipmaking Device Solutions (DS) division powered the record quarter, generating KRW 106.5 trillion in operating profit behind strong demand for HBM4 memory chips used in artificial intelligence servers. In addition, Samsung Display contributed KRW 1.1 trillion in operating profit.

Conversely, the consumer-focused Device eXperience (DX) division reported an overall operating loss of KRW 0.8 trillion. Within DX, the mobile and networks unit registered a KRW 0.6 trillion loss—a slight improvement from its KRW 0.7 trillion loss in Q2—despite revenue rising to KRW 37.7 trillion from KRW 34.1 trillion a year earlier, a period when the unit generated KRW 3.6 trillion in profit. Samsung attributed the earnings compression to industry-wide component cost pressures. Meanwhile, the TV and appliance unit lost KRW 0.2 trillion due to rising logistics and raw material expenses.

As tech industry giants scale up infrastructure spending—much like how big tech AI capex projects reach $820 billion—semiconductor manufacturers face enormous demand pressures alongside rising input costs.

Dividend Declarations and 2027 Supply Outlook

Investors also focused on Samsung's capital allocation updates, particularly after competitor SK Hynix announced a 100 trillion won return plan that lifted its shares 10.9%.

Key factual takeaways from Samsung's report include:

  • Operating Profit: Reached a record KRW 107.4 trillion (~$80 billion), confirming the guidance originally provided on October 8.
  • Capital Spending: Projected at KRW 84.4 trillion this year, with KRW 76.8 trillion allocated directly to chips.
  • Shareholder Returns: Declared a Q3 dividend of KRW 4,601 per share (KRW 30 trillion total). Samsung expects KRW 55–75 trillion of its 2026 return budget to remain for share buybacks, cancellations, and cash dividends, with the board finalizing the plan in late January 2027.

Looking beyond the current quarter, Samsung projected that AI-driven semiconductor demand in 2027 will outpace overall industry supply by a wider margin than in 2026.

Why It Matters

The market's negative reaction despite record profitability highlights high expectations for tech companies benefiting from the AI infrastructure wave. Market dynamics mirror broader equity trends where heavy infrastructure investment creates near-term sell-offs, similar to how Alphabet stock dropped 8% as AI spending outpaced growth. While Samsung's memory chip business remains exceptionally strong due to HBM4 adoption, persistent losses in its mobile and appliance divisions create key headwind risks for investors monitoring corporate margins.
