NEAR Enters Top 20 Crypto Assets as Bitwise CIO Highlights $45M Revenue Potential

NEAR Protocol (NEAR) entered the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization after mounting a 125% rally over the last 30 days and surging 198% in the third quarter. The token's sustained momentum outpaced Bitcoin and Ethereum following the launch of Bitwise's spot NEAR exchange-traded fund (NRR) on NYSE Arca last month, with Coinbase Custody acting as custodian.

Strong Fee Generation and Ecosystem Growth

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan noted that while NEAR positions itself as "the blockchain for AI" aimed at facilitating automated transactions for AI agents, its current growth is anchored by real-world usage among human users. In a recent market context where NEAR Protocol rocketed 10%, the protocol's core cross-chain infrastructure has shown substantial adoption.

The network's primary transaction abstraction product, NEAR Intents, relies on market-making bots called solvers to eliminate friction across wallets, bridges, and exchanges. Hougan emphasized that NEAR Intents has established a functional revenue model independent of future artificial intelligence adoption.

Key operational metrics for the network include:

  • $30 billion in cumulative transaction volume processed by NEAR Intents.
  • $45 million in projected annual fee revenue generated for the protocol this year.
  • Token buyback mechanisms that distribute a portion of generated fees back to NEAR tokenholders.
  • 198% price gain registered during the third quarter.

Smart Contract Exploit Triggers $3.8 Million Loss

Despite positive revenue metrics, NEAR Intents suffered a security breach on Thursday resulting in $3.8 million in stolen funds. The exploit targeted a bug within the Omni deposit and withdrawal system alongside the NEAR Intents smart contract.

Protocol developers temporarily suspended deposits, withdrawals, and platform services across multiple blockchains to contain the vulnerability. The security flaw has since been patched, and official statements confirm that all affected users will be fully reimbursed for their losses.

Why It Matters

The dual developments of record transaction volume and a severe smart contract exploit highlight the operational friction facing fast-growing altcoin ecosystems. While NEAR Intents demonstrates that cross-chain abstraction can generate massive commercial traction—evidenced by $30 billion in volume—smart contract vulnerabilities remain an ongoing risk for user capital. Investors should monitor whether user confidence remains intact following the $3.8 million reimbursement process and how liquidity adapts as Bitwise's NRR ETF continues trading on NYSE Arca.
