KOSPI Plunges 4.77% to 5,654 as Alphabet AI Spending Scare Hits Samsung and SK Hynix

South Korea’s KOSPI index tumbled 4.77% from Thursday's close to 5,654.61 by 10:40 a.m. Seoul time on Friday, heavily outpacing losses across regional Asian markets following a massive tech sell-off triggered by Alphabet.

Alphabet Spending Blowback Hits Semiconductor Giants

Alphabet’s stock fell 12.64% in its worst post-earnings drop in 22 years after reporting third-quarter revenue of $127.6 billion—just missing analyst expectations of $127.93 billion—and capital spending that surged 114% year-over-year to $51.4 billion. The spending boom pushed Alphabet's free cash flow to negative $9.1 billion, sparking broader market panic over tech balance sheets after Alphabet stock erased billions in its record crash.

The sell-off spilled directly into South Korean memory chipmakers. Samsung Electronics fell 6.25%, while SK Hynix dropped 8.91%, despite SK Hynix projecting strong memory demand after posting record quarterly sales of 104.6 trillion won earlier in the week. The aggressive selling triggered a five-minute sell-side sidecar halt on the Korea Exchange at 10:04 a.m., representing the first sell-side halt in 11 trading days.

KOSPI Outpaces Regional Losses Due to Heavy Tech Weighting

The KOSPI fell about 1.7 times as hard as Japan’s Nikkei 225, which lost 2.81% after gaining 1.1% on Thursday when Advantest raised its full-year forecast. Elsewhere, Taiwan’s TAIEX dropped 2.80% to 45,069.51 by 9:53 a.m. local time, while China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.83%.

South Korea's steeper decline reflects heavy concentration in chipmakers. Samsung common and preferred shares alongside SK Hynix made up 50% of KOSPI’s total market value between October 19 and October 23. Their drops accounted for 3.7 percentage points of KOSPI's 4.77% fall.

Key takeaways from Friday's market action:

  • KOSPI dropped 4.77% to 5,654.61, outstripping the Nikkei 225's 2.81% loss.
  • Samsung Electronics dropped 6.25% and SK Hynix fell 8.91%, accounting for 3.7 points of the index decline.
  • Alphabet's capital spending jumped 114% to $51.4 billion, pulling free cash flow down to negative $9.1 billion.
  • Wall Street remains selectively bullish, with Goldman Sachs lowering its KOSPI target to 9,000 from 12,000 and UBS trimming its target to 7,500 from 8,000.

Why It Matters

This sharp market drop illustrates how benchmark indices heavily weighted toward hardware suppliers remain vulnerable to sudden shifts in hyper-scaler capital expenditure sentiment. Even as companies like Samsung and SK Hynix deliver record top-line results, investor concerns have pivoted from supply constraints to whether big-tech clients can sustainably finance massive AI infrastructure projects. Moving forward, market stability in Asian tech supply chains will depend heavily on whether mega-cap technology firms can demonstrate clear returns on their capital outlays.
