Ariel Investments co-CEO and chief investment officer John Rogers advised investors to look toward overlooked consumer equities as tech valuations stretch, naming The J.M. Smucker Company (SJM) among four value picks.
Value Stocks Offer Hedge Against AI Market Concentration
The S&P 500 closed above 7,800 for the first time on Tuesday, powered by momentum in semiconductor shares following broader index records set on Aug. 4. However, technology now accounts for roughly one-third of the S&P 500, with the top 10 companies commanding nearly 40% of the index. This concentration mirrors previous market tops, echoing broader investor concerns like Michael Burry's warnings about AI market valuations and recent volatility where the S&P 500 reversed from record highs.
Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday, Rogers noted that many non-tech consumer brands trade at forward price-to-earnings multiples below 10 times. He emphasized that valuation spreads have widened to levels not seen in 20 to 30 years.
"They’re selling at bargains because they are not the sexy things to own," Rogers explained.
Four Equities Positioned Outside AI Vulnerabilities
Rogers highlighted four companies that he believes are immune to potential AI disruption due to sustained consumer demand:
- The J.M. Smucker Company (SJM): The parent company of Folgers coffee and Jif peanut butter has advanced nearly 26% over the past six months, trailing Nvidia's 28% gain over the same period. FactSet consensus estimates suggest an additional 21% upside over the next 12 months.
- OneSpaWorld: The cruise ship spa operator has gained about 11% this year, with FactSet analyst price targets pointing to a 36% potential upside.
- Madison Square Garden Entertainment: The operator of Radio City Music Hall and other live venues has surged roughly 49% this year.
- Sphere Entertainment: The operator of Las Vegas's high-tech arena has gained more than 8% year-to-date.
Key Takeaways
- John Rogers identified value opportunities in traditional brands trading below 10 times earnings.
- J.M. Smucker Company (SJM) gained 26% over six months, nearly keeping pace with Nvidia's 28% rally.
- Top 10 companies make up nearly 40% of the S&P 500, heightening market concentration risks.
- Analyst targets tracked by FactSet imply 36% upside potential for OneSpaWorld.
Why It Matters
The historic concentration of index weight in megacap technology stocks creates asymmetric market exposure for institutional portfolios. If semiconductor and enterprise software multiples contract, broader indices could experience significant volatility. Allocating capital to stable consumer staples and live experience venues offers a valuation cushion while market participants navigate potential shifts in tech sector earnings momentum.
