Jim Cramer Calls Microsoft a Buy With $18.6B Cash Flow as Alphabet Struggles With Cash Burn

CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer named Microsoft (MSFT) a top buy following recent Big Tech earnings while warning that Alphabet (GOOGL) carries heavy baggage due to consecutive negative free cash flow quarters. Microsoft managed to maintain positive free cash flow of $18.6 billion, even as massive artificial intelligence capital expenditure exerts pressure across the technology sector.

Divergent Cash Flows in the Big Tech AI Race

Although Microsoft's first-quarter free cash flow declined 27% year-over-year, its Azure cloud revenue expanded by 48%. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood stated that Microsoft expects to sustain positive free cash flow through fiscal 2027. Jim Cramer praised the executive management, stating, "They run it like a business, not a science project."

Conversely, Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion in the third quarter following a negative $5.9 billion reading in the second quarter. The cash burn comes as Alphabet faces stock market pressure and attempts to finance aggressive infrastructure expansion. To fund operations and AI demands, Alphabet raised $12.4 billion via stock sales and $28.7 billion in debt notes, while retaining $27.6 billion in remaining share capacity under its at-the-market dilution program. Additionally, Alphabet contracted to pay SpaceX $920 million monthly through June 2029 for compute power involving roughly 110,000 Nvidia GPUs.

Amazon's Cloud Growth and Financial Health

Amazon (AMZN) missed Wall Street consensus earnings expectations, but recorded a company-record operating margin of 13.9%. Its cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), grew 39.3% to reach an annualized run rate of $184 billion. Jim Cramer, whose Charitable Trust holds positions in MSFT, GOOGL, and AMZN, designated Amazon as a buy subject to reviewing its full earnings call.

Key financial metrics across the three tech giants include:

  • Microsoft (MSFT): $18.6 billion positive free cash flow; 48% Azure growth.
  • Alphabet (GOOGL): -$9.1 billion Q3 free cash flow; $27.6 billion in remaining at-the-market equity issuance.
  • Amazon (AMZN): 13.9% record operating margin; 39.3% AWS growth reaching $184 billion run rate.

Why It Matters

The widening divergence between Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon highlights how aggressive artificial intelligence capital expenditures are straining corporate balance sheets. While Microsoft continues to finance its AI footprint through organic internal cash generation, Alphabet's reliance on external debt, equity dilution, and third-party compute lease deals increases its risk profile. Investors are watching closely to see whether escalating infrastructure costs will compress margins further across tech and broader risk assets before AI investments yield sustainable profitability.
