Hyperliquid (HYPE) surged over 16% on Thursday after Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), announced an agreement to bring Trade[XYZ]'s Hyperliquid-based perpetual futures to the United States. The token climbed from early Thursday levels near $79 to trade around $93 by mid-afternoon UTC, positioning HYPE just 5% below its record high of $98 set on September 23.
ICE Builds Regulated Retail Venue for Perpetual Contracts
Under the arrangement, ICE partnered with Trade[XYZ] to bring Hyperliquid perpetual futures to the US market. ICE will serve as the exclusive operator of Trade[XYZ]'s regulated markets, establishing a dedicated retail market and clearing structure named ICE[XYZ]. The planned venue remains subject to regulatory approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Trade[XYZ] deploys its markets through HIP-3, a Hyperliquid protocol feature that mandates deployers to stake 500,000 HYPE. The company stated its Hyperliquid markets have generated over $650 billion in trading volume in just over a year. The planned ICE[XYZ] contracts will span cryptocurrencies, equities, indices, commodities, and currencies. Customers will access these perpetual products through participating futures commission merchants following standard identity and anti-money-laundering verification.
Institutional Separation and Strategic Backing
ICE emphasized that the retail venue will operate separately from its core institutional clearing and futures franchise. With institutional participants currently accounting for more than 99% of ICE's activity, the company noted commercial hedgers will hold zero counterparty risk to retail traders on the new platform.
"We see these perp markets as additive to our futures markets, not a replacement for them," stated Jeffrey Sprecher, Chair and CEO of ICE.
In addition to operating the platform, ICE acquired a minority equity stake in Trade[XYZ], noting the purchase will not materially impact its 2026 adjusted financial results. High-profile investor Stan Druckenmiller is also joining as a backer. This deal builds upon ICE's broader digital asset initiatives; in March, ICE acquired a stake in OKX, leading to the OKXICE joint venture that filed with the SEC on October 4 to trade tokenized shares of 63 NYSE-listed companies, despite facing headwinds as Wall Street giants resist tokenized stock offerings.
Key Takeaways
- HYPE jumped over 16% in a day to near $93, placing it 5% below its all-time high of $98.
- ICE will exclusively operate ICE[XYZ], pending CFTC approval, offering perpetuals across crypto, equities, and commodities.
- HIP-3 deployment requires 500,000 HYPE staked, supporting a protocol that has processed $650 billion in volume.
- Investor Stan Druckenmiller joined as a financial backer alongside ICE's minority investment.
Why It Matters
This partnership represents one of the most direct bridges between mainstream legacy exchanges and decentralized finance derivative infrastructure. By attempting to bring non-expiring perpetual futures—traditionally confined to offshore crypto exchanges—under CFTC oversight, ICE is validating the architectural efficiency of on-chain order books like Hyperliquid. If approved, the platform could establish a precedent for how traditional Wall Street institutions package and clear crypto-native financial products for retail investors while insulating institutional market makers.
