Former Ripple Adviser Warns XRPL Tech Alone Won't Guarantee Institutional Adoption

Former Ripple CBDC adviser Anthony Welfare has warned on the AllinCrypto Podcast that technical capabilities alone will not guarantee institutional adoption for the XRP Ledger (XRPL), even as XRP trades near $1.34 following a 1.72% 24-hour gain. Speaking on the network's outlook, Welfare highlighted that bridging the gap between technical readiness and commercial adoption depends on critical factors like liquidity, custody, regulatory compliance, and cross-chain interoperability.

Institutional Bridges and Market Milestones

Welfare stressed that institutional users can utilize ledger functionality without directly holding the native XRP asset, noting that private blockchains are likely to scale first before anchoring activity to public networks. While the XRPL features high speed, low costs, and a native decentralized exchange suited for payments and tokenization, real-world utility requires trusted infrastructure that financial institutions and automated AI agents can rely on for auditable record-keeping.

Market access for XRP expanded this week with the public listing of Evernorth, a Ripple-backed vehicle holding approximately 473 million XRP. Listing on Nasdaq under the ticker XRPN, shares opened at $16.68, briefly climbed to a high of $19.38, and closed at $16.91 on Monday, October 12. By Wednesday, October 14, XRPN fell 7.40% to close at $15.26, providing traditional equity investors indirect stock market exposure to a major XRP treasury.

Ecosystem Integrations and Institutional Reach

Institutional interest in the ledger continues to grow across several global initiatives:

  • Anthony Welfare cautions that speed and low fees are insufficient without institutional liquidity, custody, and compliance.
  • Evernorth (XRPN) listed on Nasdaq backed by 473 million XRP, closing at $15.26 on October 14 after dropping 7.40%.
  • XRPL ecosystem adoption expands through DriveWealth funding rails using RLUSD and IMF tokenization research.

A European consortium is currently targeting euro stablecoin deployment across several networks, including the XRP Ledger. In addition, the IMF mapped the XRPL alongside prominent public ledgers in official discussions covering tokenized finance. DriveWealth also integrated RLUSD on the XRPL to accelerate global account funding, while institutional access broadened via Ripple Prime services for Brevan Howard alongside broader RLUSD banking rails.

Why It Matters

The rollout of XRPN on Nasdaq offers institutional capital a regulated path to crypto balance sheets without direct token custody, mirroring corporate treasury models. However, Welfare’s analysis underlines a key strategic reality: long-term ledger value hinges on seamless interoperability and enterprise compliance rather than token speculation alone. As global banks pilot multi-chain stablecoins and asset tokenization, Ripple must ensure XRPL remains the preferred settlement layer against competing layer-1 networks.
