Crypto Wallets Pivot to In-App Swaps and Utility as 11.5M Tokens Collapse

Crypto wallet providers are shifting away from broad token listings toward integrated financial services, as basic token storage becomes commoditized across the industry. With more than 11.5 million tokens dying last year alone—driven in part by rapid minting platforms like Pump.fun—wallets are increasingly competing on active user engagement, in-app swaps, and payment infrastructure.

  • 11.5 million tokens died last year, making broad asset listing a secondary metric for wallet survival.
  • D'CENT, a South Korean hardware wallet, integrated the ChangeNOW exchange API to reach over 1 million registered users and 40,000 daily active users by 2025.
  • Cake Wallet scaled its base 117 times from 15,000 downloads to 1.75 million users with 300,000 monthly active users by embedding third-party swap tools.
  • MetaMask added feature controls allowing narrow permissions, such as spending caps of 10 USDC per day.

Shift From Asset Storage to Integrated Utility

Historically, crypto wallets attracted users by listing new tokens ahead of competitors. However, disposable tokens have made extensive listing support a baseline feature rather than a competitive differentiator. Wallet creators now rely on third-party infrastructure tools like the ChangeNOW exchange API to offer immediate trading and staking capabilities inside the app.

For example, South Korean hardware wallet D'CENT expanded beyond key storage by incorporating in-app token swaps, helping its device sales nearly triple year-over-year while pushing registered users past 1 million with 40,000 daily active users by 2025. Similarly, Cake Wallet grew from 15,000 downloads to 1.75 million users and 300,000 monthly active users, a 117-fold increase. According to ChangeNOW Chief Business Development Officer Yana Mar, lean integration allows wallet teams to focus on security and interface design without having to build complex exchange engines, compliance models, or licensing frameworks from scratch—a hurdle previously faced by platforms like Zelcore.

Stablecoins and Advanced User Experience

As stablecoin supply contracts ahead of major macroeconomic decisions, overall stablecoin settlement volume approached trillions of dollars in 2025, nearing traditional payment network volumes. This growth has made stablecoin yields, fast transfers, and card integrations central to wallet adoption strategies, even as broader industry developments unfold around crypto payment delays.

To improve onboarding, developers are turning to account abstraction to simplify network fee management and transaction batching. MetaMask now enables granular dapp permissions, allowing users to authorize specific actions like spending up to 10 USDC daily or executing automated strategies across a 30-day period. Consequently, teams like Trust Wallet are shifting key performance metrics from initial app downloads to recurring transaction volume and active user retention.

Why It Matters

The transition from passive holding to active utilization reflects a maturing market where user experience dictates market share. By abstracting away blockchain complexities and embedding swap rails, wallet providers are transforming into comprehensive financial hubs capable of onboarding non-native crypto users. As token creation remains trivial, wallet monetization will depend entirely on transactional velocity rather than asset variety.
