Major cryptocurrency-linked equities are suffering deep pullbacks despite headline stock market indexes hovering near record levels, with Coinbase (COIN), Circle (CRCL), and Robinhood (HOOD) trading 40% to 56% below their recent peak levels. Financial commentary outlet The Kobeissi Letter has characterized the sharp divergence as a "stealth bear market," noting that broader index performance is being propped up by an unusually narrow group of megacap technology firms.
Tech Heavyweights Mask Crypto Equities Decline
Data from Kobeissi shows market gains have been heavily concentrated, with just 10 stocks driving 70% of the S&P 500's gains since March 30. Nvidia alone accounted for 13% of the index's total advance, while major index contributors such as Alphabet remain 28% below their highs.
In contrast, public crypto-linked stocks are facing severe headwinds:
- Coinbase ($COIN) has dropped 56% from its high, ranking as the third worst-performing tech stock tracked in Kobeissi's 20-stock bear market list.
- Circle ($CRCL) has fallen 44% from its peak, including an 11% intraday drop in September when the Senate CLARITY Act vote stalled.
- Robinhood ($HOOD) sits 40% below its peak despite delivering record third-quarter revenue of $1.4 billion, as diluted earnings per share slid 16% year over year.
- AppLovin ($APP) leads the overall tech decline at -65%, followed by CoreWeave ($CRWV) at -57%.
Rate Expectations and Earnings Drag Down Sentiment
Macroeconomic shifts have added pressure across risk assets. Mid-October data from Kobeissi indicated futures markets were pricing in three Federal Reserve rate hikes by June 2027, representing a complete reversal from the three rate cuts expected at the start of 2026. At the same time, spot crypto markets remain sluggish as Bitcoin repeatedly dips below $80,000, remaining under pressure even after a US Treasury $6 billion buyback reached its limit on Tuesday.
The equity pullbacks precede Coinbase's third-quarter financial report due after the market close on Thursday. Wall Street forecasts Q3 revenue near $1.2 billion—a 36% year-over-year decline—alongside an overall loss. During Q2, Coinbase reported a 20% year-over-year fall in consumer transaction revenue to $452 million and a 25% quarter-over-quarter drop in spot trading volume. While economist Peter Schiff noted that narrow market breadth preceded 50% market drops in 1973 and 1999–2000, Kobeissi projected a broad market rally if interest rate and energy cost pressures subside.
Why It Matters
The pronounced gap between record stock index levels and crypto equity performance illustrates how top-heavy tech gains obscure broader weakness across digital asset businesses. Although firm revenues such as Robinhood's $1.4 billion quarter show user retention, declining spot trading volumes and regulatory delays like the stalled CLARITY Act continue to suppress valuation multiples. Investors should monitor whether upcoming earnings reports and Federal Reserve policy shifts can reignite volume growth across retail and institutional crypto trading platforms.
