Chinese Dip Buyers Drive Record Gold Volume as Price Drops Below $4,000

Physical gold demand in China has surged as spot gold prices fell 0.50% to $3,996.96, driving weekly trading volume on the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) to its highest level since April ahead of an upcoming Federal Reserve interest rate decision.

Physical Bullion Volume Spikes in Shanghai

Trading on the SGE's Au99.99 contract hit 43 million lots last week, representing approximately 430 tons of physical metal. Because the exchange requires full payment and physical delivery, the volume points to spot retail and institutional accumulation rather than paper leverage.

"Domestic gold demand is increasingly running against the price trend, strengthening as prices fall," stated Zijie Wu, an analyst at Jinrui Futures. Bank accumulation programs allowing small periodic purchases saw nine-month volume surpass full-year 2025 totals. This follows central bank figures from an April SGE report showing commercial lenders sold 2,187 tons to consumers in 2025—more than tripling 2024 levels.

Institutional buying has matched consumer interest. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) expanded its reserves by 740,000 ounces in September, marking its largest single-month purchase since October 2023 and extending its buying streak to 23 consecutive months. The acquisition occurred during a month when gold dropped more than 6%.

Chinese Savers Flee Equities and Bonds

The surge in physical gold buying coincides with severe pressure across domestic Chinese assets. China's stock market has erased $2.4 trillion in value since its May peak, with the benchmark CSI 300 index entering a bear market last week amid ongoing property market weakness and a record low on China's 5-year bond yield on Tuesday. With investment bank Morgan Stanley forecasting further equity declines, savers have redirected capital toward precious metals.

Gold has declined 7.73% since January 1, initially slipping under the $4,000 threshold on October 23 for the first time since July. Similar macro factors have impacted related risk assets as gold ETF flows flip dynamic in broader global markets.

Fed Decision and Key Technical Levels

Market focus now shifts to Wednesday's Federal Reserve rate decision. Justin Lin of Global X ETFs identified $3,900 as the next critical technical support test for bullion, while Bank of America analysts warned of a potential drawdown toward $3,750 if monetary easing disappoints.

Key Takeaways:

  • Shanghai Gold Exchange Au99.99 volume reached 43 million lots (430 tons) last week.
  • PBOC added 740,000 ounces in September, extending accumulation to 23 straight months.
  • Spot gold traded at $3,996.96, marking a 7.73% loss year-to-date.
  • Chinese equities have shed $2.4 trillion since May as the CSI 300 entered a bear market.

Why It Matters

Persistent physical demand from Chinese retail investors and the PBOC provides a structural floor for gold during period of global macro tightening. As domestic Chinese property yields fall and stock market valuations contract, Asian physical allocation remains a key counterweight to Western paper sell-offs. Traders will closely monitor whether physical buying can defend the $3,900 level if Federal Reserve policy signals remain hawkish.
