BitMine Nears 5% Ethereum Supply Target as Staking Yields Reach $358M

Ethereum treasury company BitMine Immersion Technologies held 6,001,302 ETH as of Sept. 28, leaving the firm just 103,698 ETH short of its goal to acquire 5% of Ethereum's total circulating supply. Purchasing the remaining balance would cost approximately $279.8 million at the company's Sept. 27 reference price, which represents roughly 42% of its reported $672 million pool in cash and marketable securities.

Accumulation Pace Slows as Capital Priorities Shift

BitMine acquired 17,362 ETH in its latest weekly update, marking a 37% decrease compared to the 27,562 ETH purchased the preceding week. The company has bought ETH continuously every week since initiating its treasury reserve strategy in June 2025. Much like public entities implementing aggressive balance sheet expansion through Bitcoin accumulation strategy moves, BitMine has occasionally weighed share buybacks against token additions.

In July, the firm repurchased approximately 5.5 million BMNR shares at an average price of $15.6156 for a total outlay of $85.9 million, while purchasing 7,430 ETH during that same weekly period. Chairman Tom Lee confirmed that the reduced token buying pace at that time directly reflected the capital allocated to the stock repurchase. Valuation dynamics across public treasury entities add further context: a Sept. 24 study by DWF Labs revealed that only 4 of the 20 largest digital asset treasury companies by assets under management traded above a 1.0 mNAV ratio (market value relative to underlying crypto holdings).

Staking Yields and Strategic Milestones

While BitMine holds sufficient liquidity to fund the remaining 103,698 ETH required to reach 5%, its existing token holdings are already yielding significant cash flow. As of Sept. 27, BitMine had 5,067,309 ETH staked, representing roughly 84% of its total portfolio.

Key details regarding BitMine's operational position include:

  • $358 million in projected annualized staking revenue at current balance levels, calculated using a 2.62% seven-day yield.
  • $424 million in projected annualized rewards if the firm fully stakes its entire 6,001,302 ETH reserve.
  • Expansion of its institutional staking platform, MAVAN, to serve custodians, partners, and institutional investors.
  • A remaining capital commitment of $279.8 million needed to hit 5%, set against $672 million in available cash and liquid assets.

Chairman Tom Lee is scheduled to present a keynote address titled "Ethereum's Wall Street Moment" at Korea Blockchain Week on Sept. 30, where market participants anticipate further clarity on the firm's post-target capital allocation.

Why It Matters

BitMine's proximity to the 5% threshold highlights a critical strategic pivot for corporate crypto treasuries moving from asset accumulation to yield generation. As equity market premiums (mNAV) contract across digital asset treasury companies, relying on share issuance to purchase spot assets becomes dilutive to shareholders. BitMine's ability to generate up to $424 million in native staking yield gives the company a recurring income stream that non-yielding treasury assets cannot replicate, redefining how public firms maintain long-term balance sheet growth.
