Binance to Terminate UAH Fiat Support and Delist USDT/UAH Trading Pair

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance will close UAH (Ukrainian hryvnia) deposits and withdrawals via Fiat Trade UAH and delist the USDT/UAH spot trading pair after September 28. The company confirmed that all remaining UAH balances will be automatically converted to USDT by September 30, shutting down a crucial local fiat entryway for millions of Ukrainian users.

Key Details of the UAH Delisting

  • September 28 Cutoff: Services for Fiat Trade UAH deposits and withdrawals, as well as USDT/UAH spot trading, will cease after September 28.
  • Order Cancellation: "All open orders on the USDT/UAH Spot trading pair will be automatically removed after trading ceases. Users are advised to manage their UAH balances and open orders before the above deadlines," Binance stated.
  • Automatic Conversion: Any UAH balances left on the platform after the deadline will be automatically converted into USDT by September 30 without requiring manual user action.
  • Local Presence: Ukraine has served as a key market for Binance, where the exchange launched one of its seven official local WhatsApp channels earlier this year.

Mounting Regulatory Friction in Europe and the US

The service changes come alongside tightening regulatory enforcement across Europe and North America. Following the launch of the MiCA framework on July 1, Binance applied for a license in Greece but was rejected. According to The Wall Street Journal, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde personally requested Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to reject the application over past compliance failures and concerns regarding stablecoin competition against the digital euro. European authorities have increasingly targeted non-compliant platforms as part of broader regional enforcement under MiCA regulatory rules.

Concurrently, Bloomberg reported that US federal authorities are investigating whether Binance permitted Iran-linked trading activity on its platform. In 2023, Binance agreed to plead guilty and pay $4.3 billion in penalties to resolve US anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations. Former CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) served four months in prison and paid a $50 million fine before receiving a presidential pardon from Donald Trump.

Why It Matters

The removal of the USDT/UAH trading pair strips away a vital liquidity pipeline in one of Eastern Europe's most active retail crypto markets. Operationally, it underscores how traditional banking pressure and regulatory enforcement continue to constrain centralized exchange fiat operations globally. As fiat gateways tighten, Ukrainian users will likely be forced to rely more heavily on peer-to-peer desks or decentralized stablecoin infrastructure to move local currency into digital assets.
