“Binance CEO Richard Teng Expresses Deep Concern for Detained Executive Tigran Gambaryan’s Worsening Health”

Calls for Tigran Gambaryan’s Release Amid Health Concerns

Pressure is intensifying on the Nigerian government to release Tigran Gambaryan, a detained executive from Binance, as Richard Teng, the CEO of the crypto exchange, voiced concerns about Gambaryan’s deteriorating health.

Health Deterioration During Detention

In a blog post this week, Richard Teng disclosed that Gambaryan’s health has “deteriorated rapidly” since his unjust detention six months ago. Teng stated that Gambaryan is suffering from significant medical issues, including severe pain caused by a herniated disc, which has rendered him unable to walk.

“Today marks six months since Tigran was unjustly detained. He is denied proper medical treatment and legal counsel,” Teng remarked. He appealed to the Nigerian government on humanitarian grounds to allow Gambaryan to return home for urgent medical care and to be reunited with his family.

Legal and Medical Access Denied

As Gambaryan’s trial for money laundering charges approaches—scheduled for September 2—he has reportedly been denied access to both his legal counsel and a representative from the U.S. consulate. This has raised further concerns about the fairness of his legal proceedings.

Despite a court order, the Nigerian government has not released Gambaryan’s medical records for several months, which adds to the distress surrounding his situation. Teng emphasized the potential long-term effects on Gambaryan’s physical and mental health if these issues continue.

Background of the Detention

Tigran Gambaryan was detained in Nigeria in late February alongside another Binance employee, Nadeem Anjarwalla. The pair were in Nigeria for discussions on crypto policy with government officials and were assured “safe passage.” Following their arrest, Gambaryan’s health notably declined.

U.S. lawmakers, including French Hill and Cynthia Houlahan, visited Gambaryan in June and reported that he was suffering from malaria and double pneumonia, as well as significant weight loss due to the harsh conditions in prison.

Advocacy for Release

Teng expressed deep concern over Gambaryan’s situation, stating, “Tigran is a proud American who should not be subject to such unjust treatment.” He urged the U.S. government to leverage its influence to secure Gambaryan’s release and ensure he receives adequate medical treatment.

Teng believes that the U.S. political apparatus has the capacity to designate Gambaryan as one of its “unlawfully detained” citizens overseas, citing substantial reasons to take such action. The plea for action comes as calls for humanitarian intervention grow louder amidst growing concern for Gambaryan’s well-being.
