“Sam Altman’s Worldcoin Transforms into ‘World Network’ as Project Evolves Beyond Original Goals”

Introduction to World Network

Worldcoin, the cryptocurrency initiative co-invented by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has made significant changes by rebranding itself as World Network. This rebranding, announced on Thursday, comes with a renewed focus on enhancing its mission of global identity verification.

Enhanced Iris-Scanning Technology

At a recent event in San Francisco, World Network introduced the latest version of its orb iris-scanning device. This new iteration boasts improved technology, including 5G connectivity, and delivers nearly five times the AI performance of its predecessor. The upgrades were made possible by incorporating the cutting-edge NVIDIA Jetson chipset.

The design of the orb has also been streamlined, featuring 30% fewer components to simplify the device. Additionally, a removable external SD card has been incorporated, allowing for easy inspection and addressing concerns about data transparency that have been raised regarding the project’s data collection practices.

Introducing Non-Biometric Identity Verification

World Network is actively exploring alternatives to its original iris-scanning approach. The revamped World ID 3.0 now includes World ID Credentials, which enable broader participation in the identity program without necessitating iris scans. One notable method allows users to verify their identity through NFC-enabled passports, providing verification of age, nationality, and passport ownership while maintaining privacy. This approach is particularly aimed at individuals who are wary of sharing biometric information.

Integrating Third-Party Applications for User Engagement

In response to the rising concerns surrounding deepfakes and digital impersonation, World Network is incorporating its identity verification system into popular communication platforms like FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Zoom. This integration aims to bolster security and trust in digital interactions.

The company is also planning updates to its mobile app, which will support “mini apps” developed by third-party providers. This enhancement is designed to improve user experience and expand the functionalities available within the World Network ecosystem.

Launch of World Chain Mainnet and Strategic Focus Shift

Another significant milestone for World Network is the official launch of its World Chain mainnet. This blockchain has been described as the “first designed specifically to prioritize human activity and transactions,” marking a notable advancement in the world of blockchain technology.

In a strategic shift, the project is redirecting its efforts from Europe to Asia. Fabian Bodensteiner, managing director of the European subsidiary, highlighted this change at the recent Sifted summit, focusing on regions where local enterprises and governments are more inclined to adopt innovative technologies.
